I don't like the 5.1.0. Anyone care to help me out?
Anyone?
First, you are not alone. When version 5 was released, there were MANY loud complaints. It was inferior in every way to Version 4. people screamed loudly, and finally (reluctantly) Verizon was forced to offer users the option to go back and downoad the old version -- Version 4. But, they only allowed this for a few weeks, and told users who were here at the time to please download it soon, as it would not be available permanently. They were correct.. it did disappear.
Now (as you may know) they have released Version 6. Is it better than 5? I do not know. I am still using Version 4 (which is GREAT!) and I refuse to upgrade and I also refuse to buy a new phone until I have read some real honest reviews that convince me they "fixed" the many issues that Version 5 introduced.
Version 5 had the following MAJOR flaws...
Unwanted advertising -- for a service WE are paying Verizon for... Shame on them.
They removed the ability to navigate ahead and see what your NEXT turn might be. And, the one after that. How can you confirm that this is the route you think is the best if you cannot look ahead? They removed this feature, which (as far as I know) is found on every other Navigator, both stand-alone ones, and cell subscription ones. Really!
Verizon reduced the font size so typical users could no longer actually READ what street they were on, nor could they READ the name of the street they were supposed to be looking out for in anticipation of the next turn. They had to make room for extra "fluff" and advertising and irrelevent nonsense on that same screen,. so they reduced the font size dramatically.
Verizon took the most common functions (like -- duh -- actually "Navigate" and "Favorites" and buried them deep in the menus, so one was forced to hit six and seven and eight buttons prior to actually using the device for what it was intended. What had previously been intuitive was now hidden. Want to Navigate to a place you have already saved as a "Favorite"? Be prepared to search... and search... Even after you learn where your "Favorites" are, you will also "learn that it takes seven button hits to get there. Seven.
LONGER wait periods. VERY Why? Because the new version has to download weather data (whether you wanted it or not) and download customized advertising. So, from start to navigate typically took from 30 seconds to 60 seconds longer before you even BEGAN to download the data so the device could "calculat" your route.
They removed many functions, in order to save file size / space. all so you could enjoy advertising, weather, headlines, and (as Verizon proudly announced) so you could "update your Facebook page." For shame. It is a Navigator, **bleep** it!
There were other flaws, but the ones above are the most glaring and annoying.
So, has anyone tried version 6? Did it fix things, and put back the features found in Version 4, and does it also get rid of the "bells and whistles" of advertising and weather and headlines and social networking nonsense?
