activating an unlocked smartwatch - Galaxy 5 Pro

I am considering the purchase of an unlocked Galaxy 5 Pro, either pre-owned, open box or even a 3rd party reseller. I have seen a couple of posts where users had difficulty activating the device, even being told Verizon will not activate a device they did not sell.

If I go down this path, should I anticipate a fight? One poster had to file with the FCC in order to get service.
