I am eager to get 4G service but there are no Verizon 4G phones with QWERTY keyboards for Verizon. What gives?
All the same stuff....faster.
I thought it was a given that I meant smart phone if looking for 4G....but, yes, an Android smart phone.
dwayneindetroit wrote: I am eager to get 4G service but there are no Verizon 4G phones with QWERTY keyboards for Verizon. What gives?
I guess with only 1 4G phone out at this time you really only had a 50% chance of finding it with a QWERTY keyboard. Ask this question when there are 10 or more 4G phones release on Verizon and maybe someone can give you an answer.
I guess with only 1 4G phone out at this time you really only had a 50% chance of finding it with a QWERTY keyboard.
Must be new math.... Where is the other 50%??
With only 1 4G handset, and that 1 not having a physical QWERTY keyboard means there are 0% that do have one or put the other way, 100% of the currently avaialble 4G handsets don't have QWERTY physical keyboards.
Using a virtual keyboard take a little practice, but I am much faster using that than a physical keyboard nowdays. They key is to make sure you use the keyboard calibratation tool. This adjusts the keyboard to your typing and makes it more accurate. That along with the hints that popup as you type, gets most of the words right easily.
Sprint has two 4g phones with physical keyboards already out. If they roll out 4g in my area before there is a solid release date on a verizon 4g phone with physical keyboard then I will almost certainly be switching to Sprint.
No reason on Earth that Verizon could not roll out their own version of the Samsung Epic 4g in short order, and that phone would keep me with VZW.
Add me to the list of people waiting for a 4G QWERTY.
I use my phone heavily for business, and could use the added speed of 4G. I will pay for tethering and data and a fat plan (I already do all that for 3G) but I cannot effectively use the touch-screen keyboard for business. And I hate losing most of my screen while replying to emails. I've grown to like the Android interface (girlfriend has an Droid2) but will stick with my TouchPro2 until Verizon offers a 4G LTE, or until I can convince the girlfriend that Sprint customer service is worth suffering through for the much better 4G selection and extremely better pricing for fully loaded plans like ours.
Seriously Verizon, this is ridiculous. Every other carrier has a 4G qwerty.
I sure hope Verizon is not holding out in order to sell more Droid 3 devices - which i have read will not have 4G.
Thanks for your feedback. As we just released the HTC ThunderBolt, and we will be having new 4G devices available in the new future. We do offer a way to sign up for email alerts to be informed on when new devices and products will become available.
Please use this link to go to the website, then scroll down to the lower left hand of the screen. The link is:
http://search.vzw.com/?market=53520&q=email+alerts&p=null&ss=null&b2eFlag=N
That's, unfortunately, not an option for me. Sprint has 4G phones with a physical keyboard and an offensive premium fee for 4G BUT there is no 4G service in my area. Verizon has 4G Service in my are but no phone with a physical keyboard.
Another week gone by, another disappointment. This is pitiful.
dwayneindetroit wrote: Another week gone by, another disappointment. This is pitiful.
I haven't seen anything in the works for what you are talking about. It might be a long year for you buddy
bonic, charge, incred 2..nothing i see in the works has a keyboard
I had similar concerns about typing on a touchscreen keyboard. Physical keyboards and regular virtual keyboards were problematic for me. Word tracing virtual keyboards (like Swype, Ultra Keyboard and SlideIt) are what work best for me. Have you given any of those a try? Those types of keyboards can take your thumbs out of the process, as most people trace with their index finger.
How do you hold the phone and use your index finger to trace? That feels kind of tough in my mind, I use my thumbs to type whether it is a touchscreen or physical key buttons. Right now 4G isn't in my area so I am not too concerned about upgrading, but Verizon clearly hates the physical qwerty keyboard as their best and only semi high end android phone for android is the Droid 2 Global right now. As such I am probably going to go for a 4.3" full touchscreen phone, but typing without looking will be dead to me and speed will be somewhat limited, though I can type pretty well on a horizontal touchscreen.
Also I tried swype as it is built into my phone but I couldn't see where my thumb was stopping so even doing their simple 4 letter test word seemed super hard to me.
Thank you for your inquires and feedback. In addition to what was stated, we do respect the fact that more 4G devices are being requested. Please have faith that more of these type of devices will become available in the near future. We invest much time and effort with the manufactures to develop the devices that would be what our customers desire. Thanks to those who have signed up for the email alerts as this is a good way to be kept informed. Also, refer to out website from time to time as well.
Verizon needs to really get with the program. I still have a Razor
in NYC and I am waiting for the ultimate Verizon phone. The 4G
phone is great but still Bulky, I do prefer a smaller sleeker phone.
Like the Iphone appearance or something resembling it. No more
bulky phones, with weird keyboards...we need change Now
It appears they are waiting for the new tiered data plans for phones to kick in before releasing more. $$$
21st Now, I'll look into your suggestion. Thanks.
I was holding out hope for the Droid 3 but the Droid X2 was just released WITHOUT 4G. That doesn't bode well.
I will not be upgrading my phone unless its has a physical qwerty keyboard and 4g. My droid 1 still does everything any other phone can do.
I been with verizon for years now. (8) If I don't see any future of a good phone on 4g I may have to jump ship to another carrier.
I agree with you completely kuruma. I'm looking for something along the lines of (but better than) the Samsung Epic 4G: slider, 4G, 4-inch screen (for a more compact footprint than these 4.3-inch monsters),and preferably that gorgeous Samsung Super AMOLED Plus screen. Like you, I have been with Verizon for around eight (8) years. And for the first time, I am seriously considering jumping ship to another carrier. All of Verizon's current and rumored 4G phones are too much alike: 4.3-inch screen, no keyboard. What if that's not what I want?!
C'mon Verizon! I am highly disappointed.
I'm now convinced they just don't care what customers want any more. There are so few choices now that we just have to take what Mega-CarrierX crams down our throat. Adapt or suffer.
Hi dwayneindetroit,
Of course we care about out customers. I am pleased to see how earger you are to take advantage of a 4G Network via a qwerty keyboard device. Please sign up for notifications: Email Notifications.
Thank you for being loyal Verizon Wireless customer,
The smoke-blowing cut-and paste empty replies from VZW reps on these boards about this issue has gone on now for over two months. All we hear is "oh wait, oh wait, maybe someday we will listen and actually make a device the remotely resembles what our competition offers." Instead there are ZERO phones even rumored for Verizon to be 4g with a physical keyboard. All I see at any of the press conferences, trade shows, or even the leaks on the forums are more of the same candybar form with only virtual keyboards. Vzw even decided for some completely insane reason that the upcoming Droid 3 will NOT have 4g. So we get a new physical keyboard phone but it has NO 4g ?! Seriously, what are you people thinking?
You do realize high-usage professionals are the most likely people to need a physical keyboard, right? You do realize you have left an entire market with ZERO phone options on your 4g network while EVERY OTHER 4g network is catering to those users, right? So, Verizon has done the following: locked themselves out of any kind of competition with any other major carrier for any customer who wants a physical keyboard with 4g.
I understand the delays with Blackberry -- I know that is RIM's issuie and it will be early 2012 before we see those 4g devices -- but even they have released information about specific models they are working on for 4g networks. Plus, there are a number of good to great 4g Android phones on other carriers. Verizon has no excuse for being so far behind on this except for either (1) incompetence or (2) a flat decision that customers like me and the others in this thread are just not important.
Fine. It seems other carriers do value us and our needs. Maybe we should take our business there. 10 years with Verizon might just be enough for me.
Verizon seems content to keep putting out mediocre phones. I am seriously regretting buying out my contract from my previous cell company to come to Verizon. The 4G phones being offered on that networks puts the thunder-turd, non revolution, and droid pathetic to shame. I've already added up the cost of buying out my contract and he appears it will be worth it since all indications are Verizon will not be releaseing another 4G phone any time soon. I don't see why it's so hard for them to put out a press release saying either the Droid Bionic or Samsung Function are coming soon. But I guess they want to make sure being are still shelling out hundreds for the the 4G waste-oids they already released.
I am totally with you! Touch screen keyboards just don't do it for me. I returned the Storm for and LG Touch just for the qwerty keyboard! I'm due an upgrade so i'm waiting for the release of a 4g phone with a qwerty keyboard also. The phones are just more solid. I've been searching and haven't found any new release dates prior to december. So until then I'll be holding on to my touch!
We ALL need to stop settling for these mediocre offerings and make sure our voices are heard. When my contract expired, I opted for a a month-to-month offering from a competitor for less than one third the price. It has actually worked out much better than expected, so far. That's where I'll be unless & until VZW takes us seriously.
AMEN!!!!!
1) My fingers don't work well on touchscreen (too cold?)
2) Lose a lot of the screen with the virtual keyboard.
3) Virtual keyboards slow
The LG ENV was a GREAT phone.
It worked like a phone when closed and like a little PC when open.
It takes too many virtual touches now to get to the phone features.
Looking forward to 4G - but it won't happen with a virtual keyboard.
For the Verizon reps out there - I am not signing up for general email alerts.
ALSO - for us old geezers (hey I am still filing new software patents) please
provide bigger text!!!!!
I have another year on contract, so hopefully VZ will respond.
Also, please provide wireless charging - I am wearing out the usb port with charging.
Kirin,
I have also seen the post that states the antenna adds too much weight, though I'm struggling to understand how it could be that significant. The thing is, I would accept additional size and weight to get the features I want (4G+Physical QWERTY Keyboard -and/or- additional battery life). I'm sure quite a significant number of people would. But the manufacturers and service providers won't even give us the option. They undermine us by doubting we can make good decisions for ourselves. Extremely frustrating.
Another week, another disappointment!
Why can't I give Kudos on this post? Is Big Red blocking them?
Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one that wants a 4G phone with a physical keyboard.
I've got fat fingers that make typing on a virtual keyboard completely unbearable. Seeing how many people on all the different forums want a phone like this, I'm amazed that I can't find information anywhere that Verizon is working on it.
I currently have a BlackBerry Tour and have been eligible for upgrade for some time. I'm looking to switch to an Andriod device, and since 4G is already in my area, I'm not going to waste money on a phone that doesn't have all the features I want.
Come on Verizon, get with it ...
I had an LG Ally for some time. It has a great keyboard and runs Android 2.2. However, the CPU is awful. The phone kept crashing on me - especially since I do programming on my phone.
Reluctantly, I bought a used Droid Incredible which is OK but I really would rather 4G.
VERIZON - MY CONTRACT IS UP AND I WILL SWITCH CARRIERS IF YOU DO NOT PUT OUT A 4G PHONE WITH A QWERTY KEYBOARD WITHIN 2 MONTHS!
Anybody have any ideas on how to get Verizon to acknowledge us?
WOW! The Verizon reps post about the HTC Thunderbolt touch screen was marked as a "solution" to this post. WRONG!!
Previously, the ability to add kudos to this post was missing. It appears VZW wants to tamp down criticisms from this post. This is ridiculous. Just come out with the right phone. That's how you shut us up!
I think we're outta luck this year!
Are there really no phones with LTE and physical keyboards coming or is that speculation? I ask because I see no reason to upgrade to a newer phone with the same features.
Well, johnham, I think most of us figured there would be 4G phones with physical QWERTY keyboards by now. A few of us....well, me at least...hoped the reports about the Droid3 being 3G would be wrong. Unfortunately they were accurate.
So, your choices are:
1) Buy the slate/touchscreen phone you don't want and be stuck with it for a 2 year contract
2) Buy the out-of-date 3G phone you don't want and be stuck with it for a 2 year contract
3) Refuse to buy any junk and, eventually, somebody will listen.
I, personally, think as long as we keep buying the junk, that's all we'll get. Option 3, here I come!
Aren't the 4G phones 3G compatible? If so, shouldn't the major new releases be 4G phones?
This just doesn't make sense!
Just spent a wonderful afternoon with a rep in a VZW store only to learn that even the new, just released, killer phone, the Motorola Droid 3, is still only 3G. Like others, if you are touting your new 4G-LTE network as the thing to have, why are you wasting our time with expensive, top end handset that doesn't work on your best network? I own stock in VZW and have been a loyal customer for over 25 years! My personal and business account requires a substantial expenditure for me and my small company each month - I should be able to get the equipment that I want - Equipment that actual does what I need. Perhaps I should just take my business elsewhere - if I treated my clients this way, I would have been out of business years ago. VZW - you must assume we will keep buying underperforming products because you keep marketing them - your competitor carries seemingly suitable hardware, perhaps it is time to "vote" with my checkbook. Having waited months for Droid 3 only to find out that the rumors were true, it does not support 4G, leaves us empty-handed again. This is frustrating to say the least. I'm looking for one good reason to stay and wait VZW - my current hardware does not do what I need any longer and nothing you currently market makes sense to my needs . . . .
IndyGTO
To all those 4G Qwerty phone seekers,
I am just like many of you that is waiting for a 4G Qwerty phone from Verizon to come out. In fact my Blackberry took a dive after being soaked in a massive rainstorm at a ballgame a couple of weeks ago. So I lost all of my contacts which I nevered backed up (my fault) and the Tigers lost the game after a 2 1/2 rain delay which I didn't stay for cause I was drenched. I tried everything I could to get my contacts but wasn't able too. My contract ran out over a year ago. I didn't want to buy a new phone cause I heard about the 4G LTE was going to be coming out so I wanted to wait and get a 4G phone. Like alot of you, I like the physical keyboard and not the touch screen to text. Well, I got an old LG fliphone to replace the Blackberry until Verizon comes out with a 4G Qwerty phone. Well, I talked to someone who gave me an website to see what is the upcoming phones that will be coming out in the next 6 months or so for all the carriers. Good news!! According to this website, Samsung has a 4G Qwerty phone in the works and actually produced for Verizon. It is like Sprint's Epic 4G slider phone. It has to wait for approval from the FCC. After that, Verizon might introduced it soon afterwards. I think it will be like the Samsung Droid Charge but with Qwert keyboard. I personally will wait for this to come out before I renew a contract with Verizon. I know Sprint and ATT have those types of phones out now but I like Verizon's network better so I won't jump ship yet. If they were going to take a long time to come out with one then I would have consider jumping ship. So if you can wait alittle while longer, Verzion will have one soon. Most likely, HTC and LG will have a version of thest types of phones for there 4G ones that Verizon carries now. Hey Motorola might have one too. If you are interested on seeing the photos/article on this new Samsung 4G Qwerty phone for Verizon, go to [removed bad link] and click on the Verizon link and look for the featured article name Samsung slider with Android/LTE returns again in new pictures. I hope some people will be happy about this now. I know I am.

Clcik options on the original post and choose EDIT POST. You have up to one hour after you post to edit the post.
They keep erasing Tigerfans' link, even though it's for a VZW phone. I think I found the post. I'll paste the content and see if they let it stay:
Android Central is reporting that the SCH-i405 for Verizon Wireless will be an upgraded version of last year's Epic 4G for Sprint. Compared to the Epic 4G, the i405 will be powered by Android 2.3.4 with Google Talk video chat. It'll also connect to Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE network, ultimately joining the Droid Charge as the second Samsung smartphone of the kind.A source also told Android Central that we should expect the i405 to offer a Super AMOLED Plus screen with a WVGA resolution, like found on the Droid Charge. In fact, if you take the Droid Charge and turn it into a QWERTY phone with a slide-out keyboard, you basically get the idea of what the i405 will offer. In other words, Samsung's Hummingbird processor and 512MB RAM will be found under the hood. The i405 will reportedly get one performance boost compared to the Droid Charge though, namely when it comes to the battery. While the Charge offers a 1600 mAh battery out-of-the-box, the i405 is said to offer an 1800 mAh battery. The recently released Infuse on AT&T offers a 1750 mAh battery, and we guess every milliampere-hour will especially matter on a 4G LTE smartphone. That said, while the Droid Charge offers an 8-megapixel camera, the i405 will offer a 5-megapixel camera, like the Epic 4G. However, where the Epic 4G has a VGA front-facing camera, the i405 will reportedly get the same 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera as the Droid Charge. It's unknown when Verizon Wireless plans to release the i405, and what the official name of the QWERTY Slider will be.
Rumored Samsung summary:
1 GHz single core processor, 512MB RAM, 5MP rear, 1.3MP front, 480 x 800 display, 1800 mAh battery, Android 2.3.4, 5 row QWERTY slider with dedicated numbers, LTE Support.
The mechanical specs are not exactly cutting edge, but not terrible.
Good job Dwayne! That's exactly what I saw on the website. I hope Verizon comes out with soon.
Beats nothing but I gotta say I was hoping for one of those dual processor phones with more memory. A better camera would be nice, too.
Too late for me. I give up!!
You now OFFICIALLY have to pay more for less....and in some cases it's a LOT more! The tiered data plans are here.
I've been begging to give this company my business but they don't need people like me any more since they have iPhone. The really bad thing is the alternatives are slim. TMobile is almost gone and Sprint is struggling between the two behemoths. This is EXACTLY why lack of competition is bad. When there was competition, none of the carriers could go this far overboard with pricing but now, they can trample all of us.
I'll stick with my current UNLIMITED plan and then I'll have to see what my best laternative is.
Good luck to the rest of you!
Since the Droid 3 and the iPhone 4 are both 3G, other than the slide out keyboard would you recommend the Droid or the iPhone, For me the ability to have email move into separate folders in the iPhone has me sold on it. Does anyone know if the Droid 3 does the same, buying one and getting one free is very appealing.
Unfortunately, it looks as if all of Verizon's newer phones are "spyphones" - that is, they run Android.
I'm looking for a simple phone which is 4G but does not run Android. Why? Because Android is a cell phone operating system which was written by Google specifically to spy on cell phone users. If you carry an Android phone, Google knows where you are and what you do and can scrape your contact list and other data.
I want a phone which is just good for talking and texting and can hook up to a 4G network. A 4G version of the LG Cosmos would be ideal. Verizon should commission one.
