Mexico rooming charges

Hello everybody,

I just moved from Austin, Texas to El Paso, Texas which shares a border with Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Well, I'm traveling back and forth the international border and am afraid to use my phone in Mexico because of possible rooming charges. I have the NATIONWIDE SELECT 450 minutes for $59.99 plan. I just found out there is a Nationwide Plus Mexico plan that offers 450 minutes for only $54.99.

Does anyone know the difference between the Nationwide Select and the Nationwide Plus Mexico? Why would the US-Mexico plan be cheaper? Mhm, Im confused. I also have the International Value Plan under my Nationwide Select Plan which currently lets me call Mexico from the US at a cheaper rate, but would this be the same thing when calling the US from Mexico?

The only difference is that you will only have 1000 Night and weekend minutes a month.

That's not the only difference...with the Nationwide + Mexico plans there is no unlimited text messaging. You would have to choose an individual package, you can no longer have the Select plan.

You can also set your phone under your System Select settings to "Home Only"...this will make your phone roam only off domestic towers and not pick up international towers when you're near the border.

The International Value Plan should actually already give you a cheaper rate for roaming as well.

According to the International Services of the website, the Value Plan should lower the rate to $.25 for a mobile terminating call and $.09 for a landline terminating call. Not a bad reduction, but not the most ideal situation either.

Also, I think the Nationwide + Mexico only covers specific cities in Mexico and "Verizon Wireless will terminate your service for good cause if less than half of your voice calls over three consecutive billing cycles are from within the Nationwide Rate and Coverage Area."

And a note on data, unless you have the VPak:

"Data sent or received in Mexico is billed at $0.005/KB or $5.12/MB."

Correction, the International Value Plan has no effect on roaming charges. It only applies to calls made from the US to Mexico.

Verizon does offer a Global Value Plan that reduces roaming rates, however it doesn't apply to Mexico unfortunately.
