Is this really true? Or did the reps in the store just not know? Please advise if it is possible.

I know it is frustrating that Hotmail is not syncing properly. This is something that Hotmail and Motorola are investigating to resolve. In the mean time, I have seen success if you re-add the e-mail account and use "Other" rather than "Hotmail". Go to Settings>Accounts>Email>Add Account>Other.
