Encryption error - "not enough memory"

I just updated my D2G to 2.2.3 and I'm loving it so far, but get the following error when I try to test ActiveSync on Exchange 2010 at my work after agreeing to enable device encryption:

 

"There is not enough memory to encrypt device data. Please remove old or unused application data to free up some memory and try again"

 

When I go to Settings > Applications > Storage Use, I have 5.8GB  free in my internal storage and 2.5GB free on my SD card. Is there a way  around this error on the phone or is this a setting on the MS Exchange  server?

 

The encryption feature is specifically what I'm trying to test since I work at a health care company which requires data encryption for all mobile devices that access the network.

 

By the way I have never rooted the phone and was running stock 2.2 before upgrading.

You may need to clear the data on your email app.  menu>settings>applications>manage applications, select the all tab at the top, scroll to email, select clear cache, clear data.  You will have to re-setup your email accounts, but that should get rid of any old exchange data.  Maybe also try menu>settings>accounts & sync, select the active exchange account, press the remove account button at the bottom.
