Droid 2 turns on by itself

I've had my droid 2 for awhile now and have not experienced any unusual problems. A glitch here and there but altogether the phone has worked fine. I recently downloaded the Android software update which is identified as version 2.3.3. My system version is identified as 4.5.601.A955.Verizon.en.us. I now find that my phone, after it has been powered down using the usual procedure of holding down the on/off button and then clicking the "power off" menu option, will occasionally turn itself back on all by itself. Sometimes this happens within a few minutes of shutting the phone down and other times it may occur an hour or so later.

I suspect the problem is associated with the software update since I did not have this problem previously. Has anyone else had this experience and/or does anyone know how to fix this?

Jasper, you are not alone, Droid 3 has this problem too and the latest update did not fix it.

Hello Jasper2347,

I know an un-prompted power up can be frustrating and inconveniencing. Motorola is aware of this opportunity with your model device and are working on a resolution asap. I do not have an exact date, but I can say more than likely this resolution will come in a form of a software update. Thank you for your patience.

Please let us know when the software fix is available. My wife's phone does this every day since the last software update.

My droid 2 started doing the same thing after the gingerbread update. I called tech support several times and went thru all the steps up to and including a hard reset. It still did it. After several more calls to tech support they swiched out my phone for a certified like new droid 2. The replacement phone is still doing the restart and no, I have not reloaded any of the apps that I had on there previously. So it is nothing that I have added. Sometimes after the the phone restarts I will turn it off again and it usually stays off and other times I pull the battery at night just so I don't have to worry about it coming back on. I hope they get this fixed soon because it is annoying and inconvienent.

Does the Global Droid 2 freeze quite a bit w/out updates? If so, where do you get updates and how? Do you got to pay for them? Sorry still learning the ropes on the Global Droid 2. Thanks for the input.

Droid 2 turning on after power down is a problem not receiving sufficient attention by Verizon/Moto. My D2 started self turn-on after an automatic operating system (OS) update. Did all the things Verizon TS recommended including reinstallation of the OS w/o correcting the problem. Verizon issued a new phone - it has the exact same problem/No Fix. I run no 3rd party apps. The problem appears to be in the phone OS.

After proper power down the phone turns on anywhere from immediately to 15 minutes later. It would seem that an instruction set in the firmware is activating the phone or the OS is set to restart.

BTW, my daughter has a DroidX. She is on her 5th phone in 11 months. Her phones turn off , continually lockup and have various sorts of random issues. An other carrier is under consideration.

I recently got the system update and now have the same problem. In addition to getting woken up in the middle of the night because of new mail arriving, I had the thing turn back on in the middle of a Philharmonic concert!! Talk about inconvenient. It ended up disturbing hundreds of people and almost getting me kicked out!!

I have the same problem but here's what I did to make life a bit more bearable.... I put it in AIRPLANE mode and charge it or leave it. Also, because of the magnetic issue, I no longer carry it in a pouch.....

but until it's fixed, it's a solution worth trying for the time being. Due to all the problems, I doubt if I'd get me another droid.

Same thing here. Droid X turns on spontaneously after hard shut down at random times. This phenomenon started to occur with automatic operating system upgrade. A replacement phone did exactly the same thing. A battery replacement and SIM card was removed but the problem remained. There is definitely a problem in the operating sytem upgrade!

Verizon Wireless need to let their folks in the Stores know about this problem so that they can be informed. I have the same problem with my Droid2 and have been to at least 3 stores in 3 different states and they all claim to know nothing about this problem.

I hope this isn't a scheme to keep customers' phones turned on when they really don't need them, thereby decreasing the battery life of their phones. I've always thought Verizon did a good job with their products and services and this would really turn me against them if this was the case.

I have had the same problem since the new software update. Today, I just went to the source, Motorola. Motorola tech support said they are working on a new solfware update and there was nothing more to do except have the phone inspected and/or replaced and try replacing the battery, etc. I advised them that all of the above has been done, including replacing the phone within the last few weeks. They said sorry & please wait for the update unless you want to send in your phone to them and be w/o communications for 10-15 days. I said no thanks, can't wait to get out of the contract to get a more realiable phone. So there you have it, Motorola doesn't have a fix yet.

I have the same problem with my D2G. I will turn it off and it will spontaneously decide to turn itself back on at some random future time. I wonder if Verizon and Motorola have considered all of the ramifications of this? I am a frequent flyer and dutifully turn my phone off after boarding. It is illegal to have the phone on during flight but several times mine has been on when I pull it out after landing. Will Verizon and Motorola bail me out of jail if this is ever discovered inflight by a crew member?

anyway in your wild story if you know your phone is prone to turn on and you are concerned about it, take the battery out. I do understand this extra 15-20 seconds is a lot to ask an American but sometimes you have to get by..

That mode is not legal during takeoff and landing. The phone has to be OFF.

I have this problem too. If Motorola doesn't deal with it, they may end up in trouble. Sooner or later the airline is going to want to make an example of a passenger. When that happens, Motorola could get sued.

This so called "SMART PHONE" is anything but that,"DUMB PHONE" should be the sales pitch!

This has to be the worst cell I've owned since signing with Verizon,

BEST PHONE: LG-VX8000 Flip Phone, believe it or not, I still have this FANTASTIC CELL PHONE, best tx and rx, with ex, antenna for better reception, AND it never failed me, even when on the internet for sports!

AS for this piece of crap, the only way I can stop the "ON BY ITSELF" garbage is either, put the dummy to " Sleep", OR take out the battery after shutting down, then no problems.

Motorola still sucks regarding the products they sell to the public, as far as public service, they are mediocre.

Oh by the way, Verizon tech support, AND the local stores, most likely the dumbest people on the planet, WELL next to Radio Shack, you've got questions, we've got answers (LOL).

Hello everyone,

I just got off the phone with a very nice lady at the FCC. I explained the issue. She said the best idea is to file a formal complaint with the FCC against Verizon Wireless. It is really easy to do. It takes about five minutes. Go to www.fcc.gov/complaints. Under complaint type select wireless telephone. Under category, the third one down includes 'service'. On the next screen there is a text box at the bottom where you can type in the problem. Be sure to file the complaint against Verizon Wireless NOT Motorola. First off all, that's where most of us bought our phones. Secondly, the FCC regulates Verizon Wireless but they don't have any control over Motorola.

Let's see if we can get their attention!

like all of you I have also had this problem. A visit to a Verizon comapny store also resulted in "we never heard of this problem." So i showed them copies of these forums with replies from VZW techs. They evidentally are told to "play dumb." Finally, agent checked and learned that a fix is due late Dec or Jan. Here we are in Feb and nothing !!!

In addition to filing a complaint with FCC, may I also suggest that everyone complains to Consumer Reports magazine, your local newspaper, and/or TV station. If they are willing to publicize the problem, it will take on a life of its own. Remember what happended to Apple iphone when CR reported an issue with an antenna (?). Verizon needs pressure from outside sources to take action.

I have talked to verizon countless times about this and they keep telling me the problem will be fixed soon. I have been sent 3 new droid and they still do the same thing. I complained to Cunsumers Protrection. They sent the complaint to Verizon and Verizon sent me a new phone. And I am still having the same problem. I would like to cancel my contract with them without paying the termination fee but that is not going to happen.

This is a common problem which appeared with the latest upgrade. Several Motorola Droids have this problem, the Droid 2 and the Droid X just two of them. Both Verizon and Motorola are aware of this problem and hopefully, Ice Cream Sandwich will take care of this irritating problem. I no longer turn my Droid X off (Power off). Instead, I merely put it to sleep. During the sleep phase, although it does use battery power, it isn't that much. Another advantage is that it comes on almost immediately, no red eye staring at you, no "Droid" sound. I might also add that I recently traded my Droid 2 for an LG Spectrum, and the re-powering up has not (yet) occurred, so it appears to be a Motorola problem (not a Verizon problem).

so you're all saying right now the only solution is to remove the battery when you power off and want it to stay off. Both companies (manufacturer and service provider) are aware of the problem with no solution forthcoming in the near future???

I thought I was the only person experiencing this problem based on the response by the store staff. They acted like they'd never heard of it before. The girl behind the counter spent 20 minutes denying that it existed and then says "My manager's phone does the same thing." I started to tell her that meant she'd been lying to me, but I figured that wouldn't get any results.

My problem came to my attention when I turned it off on a plane and then it rang just as we were about to take off. The flight attendant was not happy and threatened to have me removed from the plane if I didn't comply with regulations. I took the battery out. That's a stupid way to have to solve a problem. I have a spare battery and the phone does the same thing, so changing the battery is not a solution. They're just making stuff up.

The counter person reset the phone to its original settings which meant I had to set every back to my preferences which is a real pain too. Then, they tell me it's because of an app I have on my phone, but they don't know which one. They also told me it's probably a virus and there is no anti-virus for the phone. They said the real solution would be to wipe the phone totally and start over. I'm not about to let them do that.

This started happening to me soon after I got my Droid 3. Then it started happening to my husband, who also has one. The phones have come on in the middle of the night, on airplanes, and in the theatre. I do not want my Droid and I would never buy another one. The fact that there is not a real solution is completely unacceptable. As far as I am concerned, these are non-functioning phones and we should be refunded our money. When I put the simple words "droid keeps turning itself on" into Google to search for a solution, the combination pops right up with multiple posts. The phones are flawed and need to be recalled. I can not imagine why Verizon keeps selling them and denies there is a problem. Outrageous.
