How to switch to 3G service?

I noted in one thread that it is possible to switch to 3G from 4G with an HTC thunderbolt. 

I thought the phone controls that-- but is it possible to go to 3G service?

Is there a differnce is signal strength between 3g and 4g....While I like 4G if 3g works in a weaker area 

can it be switched to 3G?

If you have the latest update (began pushing to phones on July 8th), Go to settings > wireless & networks > mobile networks > network type. Change to CDMA only.

Or you can use the LTE OnOff application from the Market. It does provide a few more options then the built in one.
