Using headphones

I have a galaxy s phone and a xoom tablet and I can't get the sound to come through the headphones on either device. Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong?

Are the headphones plugged in all the way? Do the headphones work with any other devices? Is the media volume turned up? This would be different from the phone or notification volume.
