Text message settings issues

I can't get into my text message settings. Every time I click it I get The application Messaging (process com.android.mms) has stopped unexpectedly. Please Try Again Force Close.

Does anyone know how I can fix this. I don't hear anything when I receive a text. No vibrate or sound. I went to fix it and I have tried restarting my phone and nothing works. HELP :smileyhappy:

I've been having a similar problem with Email, and I can give a suggestion similar to what was recommended to me for that. There are a couple of possibilities to try, but one of them is fairly drastic.

Less drastic: Start from the Home screen, then do Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage applications, then tap the All tab. Scroll down to Messaging and tap it. Try clearing the cache, if there's anything in the cache. Then open the Messaging app again and see if it works.

If not, the other option is to go back into Manage applications, tap Messaging, and select Clear data. This is the drastic solution, because it will (I think) delete all the messages stored on the phone. I don't honestly know if this will work, but it's a step or two short of doing a factory reset, which will lose a lot more than the messages, and I think there's a good chance that it will clear out whatever is gumming up the app.

Clearing data from the messaging app WILL delete all the messages on the phone, as well as any settings you have applied to the app. Your messages, however, can be backed up using one of many SMS backup apps in the Play Store or, if I remember correctly, can be backed up to your SIM card if you have a phone that uses one (LTE or Global phone).

In addition, before trying this, you can attempt pulling the battery for about a minute or so and see if that helps.
