When will Xoom 4G get Jelly Bean?

I purchased a used Xoom and really enjoy most of the features. Honeycomb worked well, and I have a few small issues with ice cream sandwich, like my wi-fi won't connect and my mobile 4g service will "disappear" sometimes. I also notice that my Xoom will be unresponsive if it switches from 4G to wi-fi or vice-versa. I am hoping that the Jelly Bean update will solve some of these issues as well as make my machine a tad bit faster, as I've read on most of the reviews of JB. My question is ICS was released for wi-fi Xooms back in April, but the 4G owners did get it until June, will we have to wait two to three months more to get 4.1 jelly bean?

Also hoping for the update. I bought mine new for $800 and it is still on its original 2 year contract. It was marketed as a 'Nexus' class device to get updates as the reference platform for Android, which is why I bought it. It has been very disappointing to watch my friends Transformer, bought at half the price a few months later, get updates sooner. <Comment removed to comply with the .> Please give us 4.1, Verizon!

Anyone heard anything new on this update for the Xoom 4G??? I can't believe that they actually would send out all the updates for the cell phones that came out after this tablet and not even give a timeframe for when we can expect ours to be updated.....pretty poor!

The original schedule was for Q4 2012 (http://www.droid-life.com/2012/09/14/when-is-my-android-phone-getting-jelly-bean-verizon/), but what are the odds of that happening at this point. Motorola currently has Q1 2013 on their website (https://forums.motorola.com/pages/00add97d6c).

That being said, does it really take 6-9 months to roll out an update (WiFi only vs. LTE 4G & WiFi), this is sad Verizon/Motorola.

Next time I would consider only getting a WiFi only version for this reason.

This is ridiculous. Verizon has a great network, and theyre quick with the 4g rollout, but I severely regret getting into a contract with this device. On top of the fact they make about a 29.95 profit on the ridiculously overpriced data plans. They rob us blind on data that costs them less than a nickel a gigabyte. No joke, thats a high estimate on what they pay to get us a gb of data. And then they take over six months to give us an update Google released to Wifi only Xooms in late spring/early summer 2012. If it wasnt for the deal I get on my phones that not even a prepaid carrier coukd beat (because of my Alltel plan) I would be out so quickly.

I bet Fran Shammo amd the other crooks that run this company and make several million a year salaries would get the update if they wanted it.

I agree...ridiculous! There is no reason for such a delay. We know it wasn't a Google delay, as they had it on the Xoom WiFi within a month or two. I understand that the Xoom is reaching retirement, but I have no desire to upgrade to a new tablet until this one is dead. It still runs great and has a relatively quick speed to it. Original timeline was Q4 2012, then, without any explanation they switched it to Q1 of 2013. Will it be March before we see the love?

I would love the Project Butter enhancement that makes Android the step above iOS. Not gonna lie, I love Google Now on my phone and wouldn't mind it on my tablet as well.

It's these type of process delays and mis-communications that make me want to reconsider switching to Big Red for my phone carrier as well.

Come on Verizon...make it happen!!

I have had the same issues that labrat1906 described and have sent my tablet in to Motorola several times with no luck. I am also hoping this gets resolved by an update to OS.

My lesson is learned. I have the LTE XOOM and wanted an LTE-enabled Galaxy Note 10.1, as well. I got the Wi-fi enabled one instead and the Jellybean update has already been released for it.

I just checked Motorola's site again. They don't even list a date anymore. In their exact words, "This device will be upgraded Jelly Bean (Android 4.1)." At this point, At this point, I think that will never buy another Motorola device (the Xoom and my previous phone were both Motorola). I am thinking a pure Nexus device.

Side note: At least the US is getting updated. UK and some other countries are stuck on 4.0.4 and even 3.1 for the Xoom.

This is ridiculous. The things the big V are good at are the expensive things (massive network expansion), while the simple things (good customer service, more fluid, usable GUIs, etc) are garbage.

OP thought it would be 2-3 months from HIS post, and THAT was kind of a drag. Here we are 7 months later, and still nothing?

Hey Verizon. You're sending the message loud and clear: "We have your money, so we no longer care about you." I've been a Verizon customer for 15 years. Maybe it's time to make a change.

And so it begins, guys. We vote with our dollars. Major telecom in general has had it too good for too long, but Verizon in particular has come up sorely lacking. We love the coverage, but as soon as we need actual help, they're blind and deaf.

You're better than this, Verizon. You're going to lose customers. You may not care about keeping your word, but you will care when it makes an impact on your bottom line.

Please Verizon...just roll-out the update. Show your customers that you indeed value them. Let us and everyone else know that it isn't just about the money, but the service as well. You will only lengthen the life of the Xoom and increase your profits anyways. Its a win-win all around. :smileyhappy:

I have to say, I'm very disappointed that VZW repeatedly delays the rollout of upgrades to the Xoom. C'mon guys, get your act together.

Maybe it's just me, but it feels like Verizon puts a lot of effort into getting new customers and very little into retaining the customers they have.

The fact that it has been running on XOOM WiFi since last April and on Custom Roms since last summer it is ridiculous that it has not been brought to us loyal XOOM 4G Owners....

We are their best customers and they are ********** on us.......

They don't seem to realize that by poisoning the XOOM 4G updates for us....we will never buy another 4G Tablet on Verizon again....instead opting for the NEXUS line or Tablets with WiFi connections.

Your loss Verizon.....GET THE UPDATE OUT!

(Amazingly....my Samsung Galaxy Nexus got the Jellybean 4.2.2 update today.....a # of enhancements which are made for 10" tablets).

Just forget about it. Q1 2013 is here and gone. LTE was a hassle to get. Galaxy Nexus was a total lie.

My next device will NOT be a Motorola and will NOT be on Verizon. It is too expensive for such unprofessional delay, smoke and mirrors. I feel sorry for people who continue to blindly think it is a good idea to mix the two. X Phone will be more of the same. Go with a GSM Nexus device.

I have two months until I can drop the data plan for my Xoom and can't wait. I am dropping VZW completely. By far the worst customer service of any company I have ever done business with. They take their customers for granted and only care about capturing new business. I was a loyal Motorola customer for years until they teamed up with VZW and together decided to just screw everyone they already had that was committed to a couple year contract. For everyone else's sake, I hope you have had a better experience than me.

Vegas has the over/under on the 4.1.2/JZO54K update for the Verizon Xoom at June 1 to commemorate the one-year anniversary of its last OTA update. I'm taking the under, but only by a week or so.

Keep in mind that, like the Wi-Fi model, the Verizon Xoom is functionally a Google Nexus device in everything but it's name. Thus, the updates come straight from Google but do have to be approved by Verizon before rolling out.

That said, the delay may or may not be Verizon-related. It's possible that Google hasn't done a full build yet, or there could be driver or radio issues which would require Motorola to fix. In the end, we don't know where the hangup is. What we do know is that the Wi-Fi Xoom's final update (Android 4.1.2, Build JZO54K) rolled out almost exactly six months ago. Is six months not enough time to coordinate this and get an update out for the Verizon model? This will be the Xoom's last update so just get it out already so the device can be put to bed!

All that aside, I feel sorry for all the people who own non-US Xoom models because Google doesn't update the firmware on those. They're are all handled by Motorola, and they have already said that all non-US Xooms will remain on Ice Cream Sandwich.

I'm pretty much done with this at this point. My XOOM will stay on Ice Cream Sandwich. My lesson has been learned. I now have the Wi-fi only Note 10.1 that won't be dependent on Verizon Wireless for anything, especially updates.

Fair enough but you're still dependent on Samsung. They are horribly slow at updating anything because they have to add their Touchwiz skin and all the GN10.1-specific stuff to the new Android versions. Believe me, you'll probably see 4.2 but I guarantee you won't see the next major version of Android. The reason the Xoom saw three major Android revisions is because its a Google device. If you wanted a WiFi device that will get a ton of Android updates, you would have been better off with a Google Nexus 10, which was the Xoom's true successor.

The Wi-fi Note 10.1 will be fine for me. It has already been updated to Jellybean. I'm not as impatient for updates on my tablets as I am phones. However Jellybean has been out for nine months now, and has been on the Wi-fi XOOM for around six months. This tells me that the hold up for the LTE XOOM is with Verizon Wireless.

I wanted a Nexus 10 when I bought the XOOM. After seeing the features offered by the Note 10.1, I decided that I would rather have those features on a tablet (namely the S Pen) than to have a pure Google experience. I get my Nexus fix with the Nexus 4 now.

I was told the exact same thing by Verizon customer service this time last year when the Ice Cream Sandwich update was in flux. Put no faith in this whatsoever. Customer service people really have no idea about updates. They're not told anything.

The Verizon Xoom runs a firmware that is created and updated directly by Google, so it will definitely get updated to Jelly Bean eventually. The problem is, they rely on Motorola and part OEMs for drivers and radio fixes, then Verizon has to test it and give the final thumbs up for Google to release it. That's where the delay is coming from. It's either Motorola, Verizon, or one of the part OEMs that provide drivers. It'll happen eventually. Sadly, the Xoom is no longer a priority device for Google, Motorola or Verizon so they'll get to it when they get to it.

Also, Google did a build of 4.1.1/JRO03H (the same build the WiFi-only Xoom got last July) for the 3G/4G Xoom and it was leaked onto some Android development forums. That was last August (only a month after the WiFi-only model got its JB update). The leaker claimed that it was installed on his Xoom by Motorola development, which I found plausible given that his screenshot had a radio version that was newer (his was 03.1A.66SP) than the one we all have from the Ice Cream Sandwich update. He further claimed that Verizon had signed off on it, but I found that impossible to believe. That leak had broken DRM that prevented Google Play Movies and a couple of other streaming video apps from working, and also appeared to have some issues with the user interface. Honestly, the build looked to me like Google or Motorola just took the WiFi-only build, dropped the LTE drivers into it, and were seeing how it performed for testing purposes. Now of course, this was last August and since then, we have heard nothing at all about the 4G Xoom's Jelly Bean update other than the ever-advancing release timelines on Motorola's website. Also, since that time, the WiFi-only Xoom has seen its final update to 4.1.2.

My point in telling you all this is just to provide some hard evidence that the Verizon Xoom will indeed get updated to Android 4.1.2/Jelly Bean at some point in time. When is impossible to say, but the Verizon model won't be stranded on Ice Cream Sandwich. The only reason all the non-US Xooms are stranded on Ice Cream Sandwich is because Google doesn't update the firmware for those. For all the non-US models like MZ601, MZ605 and MZ606, Motorola creates the firmware for those and it wasn't worth their time and effort to update it.

We know that this thread is moniterd so can we get an update about the Jelly Bean update. It makes no sence that it's taking this long for Verizon to release this update. I know I will cancel my plan when the two years are up if the update is not in place. Why support a company that will not support our loyality...

I do hope this is true, otherwise I'm just going to look for an AOSP build and go from there. But I'd rather stay on stock since it HAS been more stable for me. I get Verizon's desire to make sure what they're pushing out is stable, but this lag time is insane. I have a few more months on an old contract that I'm just going to have to pay ETF on, but otherwise I think I'm done with Verizon. Too slow, too expensive, and they still insist on anti-customer practices like blocking Google Wallet since they have their own payment alternative. Yes the network is great most of the time, but truthfully on my Nexus 4, AT&T has been fine and T-Mobile has been even better.

Almost a month later now, and still no sign of the update. Also now, the Xoom doesn't show up correctly in Google Play. I don't know what's going on here, but this is still a "current" device and the support should be better than this.

I think I'm done with Verizon and the LTE Xoom. Canceling data contract ang going to a wifi model that actually gets support and updates. The LTE version is one YEAR behind the wifi version, and behind all current tablet releases. The Xoom is buggy on ICS. My wife's Nexus 7 works flawlessly. You gotta do a better job to keep me as a customer.

Tell me why some of the older DROID series phones like the Droid 4, Bionic, etc.. has already received Jelly Bean but the LTE Xoom hasn't? Even the WiFi only Xoom has received the update. Whats the problem Verizon? You do realize you're a year+ behind right?

Exactly - even if this is the last update they're going to give to the LTE Xoom users, let's get it done already. The rumors for Android 5.0 are that Google is working to make it even more efficient and work better on dual core devices w/ 512MB RAM (and the Xoom has 1GB, sooo what's the deal?) There's really no reason why they shouldn't continue to do updates for the Xoom going forward...especially for people paying for LTE service on their devices! If Verizon would actually be prompt and open with the update schedule I would be paying for service right now. As things are, I just want my final update and then I'll say adios.

Just in case you guys haven't tried this. I To had a LTE xoom and I cancelled the data package but instead of being stuck and buying a WiFi only version I downloaded the Firmware for the WiFi only version from moto and installed it and now it works without the VZW stuff and acts just like a WIFI only version....Even updates like a WiFi Only version...Just note once you do this the LTE Radio will not work which I don't think will break anyones hearts..

I've been waiting like everybody else here for Verizon to get around to approving Jelly Bean for the Xoom 4G/LTE. In recent weeks, I've complained to anyone who would listen (including some Verizon customer service people), but began to despair that Verizon had abandoned the Xoom.

But tonight, I received my OTA update notification, and my Xoom is upgrading as I type this! Very exciting. Still somewhat miffed that it took, what, a YEAR?? But as they say, better late than never...

What version did you end up with? 4.2.2 or 4.1.2?

I just recived the update is available notice, it is for 4.1.2. It is still sad that this took about a year for an update. The original upgrade date was 2012 Q4, but is now 2013 Q3.

I have been thinking about replacing my Verizon Motorola 4G LTE tablet with a Samsung WiFi tablet. Bye, bye Verizon/Motorola.

It was 4.1.2. So far, so good. I haven't read up on any improvements or new features, but subjectively it feels a bit more stable/responsive.

Oh, if it is only 4.1.2, I'm not going to worry about it. I have 4.1.1 on my Xoom now. I haven't gotten the OTA, perhaps I won't because I'm not on 4.0.4. No loss. I'll probably dump my Xoom in a year or so for something lighter. I love the Xoom. It's fast and does everything I want, but it is a brick, isn't it?
