Choosing a phone

I am currently stuck between the Samsung Illusion and the Samsung Fascinate; while it seems that the Fascinate has better features, the Illusion has Android 2.3, whereas the Fascinate has Android 2.1. What are the differences between the two Androids, and is 2.3 any better than 2.1? Also, which one of the phones would you recommend?

The Samsung Fascinate has since been updated to Gingerbread (Android 2.3). Quite recently in fact.
