I have been at places with no wi fi - don't I have some sort of "internal" phone wi fi....when I am at those places and try to get on an app or internet it tells me there is no connection......
you do if you select wi-fi in settings, 3g/4g will be dropped & you can see various wi-fi's within range.some are public & some are protected/encrypted & not accessible without encryption key
