Location Services/GPS

I am new to the HTC Thunderbird/Android and am trying to understand some of the functions.

I understand that there are three options for location services: VZW Location Services, Standalone GPS Services and Google Location Services.

I have searched the user guide and this forum but have been unable to find what each option does. For example which need to be turned on for navagation to work? How about the weather app? So what features are available with/without each?

Finally have the problems discussed in 2011 been resolved with the current release level of Android (3.2) and apps or are there still problems?

I leave on the second two GPS services all the time on my Thunderbolt.

They are needed for the navigation and to some extent the weather application. If the GPS location is left off, then the weather app could only use the tower location and those wouldn't be as accurate.

Hi Sharon_HTC_Tbolt,

I understand the confusion about the different location services. I personally have all options ON at all times and I never encounter issues with my different location applications. Please see explanation below.

Google Location Services:

This option uses location services provided by Google and is helpful for android applications that provide location services such as Google maps.

VZW Location Services:

This option uses location services provided by Verizon Wireless and it helps specific Verizon Wireless applications such as the VZ Navigator.

Stand Alone GPS Services:

This option is linked directly with satellite positioning and it is helpful for some 3rd party applications that require this type of location service to function properly.

As for the problem you mention regarding the latest software update I am unable to provide a any options as I am not sure what issues you are experiencing. Please elaborate and I'm sure that our forum community and our Social Media Team will be happy to address for you. Please note that a Factory Reset resolves most post software update issues as per feedback received from other customers. Try and keep us posted.
