Unable to view text messages (continual "loading" screen)?

Recently I have been unable to view my text messages after I'm notified about receiving one. The only opportunity I have to read the message is when it briefly displays itself at the top margin of my screen when it is first received. When I open my messages, it will say that I have a certain number of unread texts that I am unable to read, as when I touch a particular contact, the "loading" screen shows up, but never appears to load. This occurs with all of my contacts. I am hoping to fix this soon and not resort to using my sms backup app forever, as it is a bit of an inconvenience and I would rather be able to read my messages by simply tapping on them. Please advise?

1. Back up the messages with a SMS backup app that also has a restore function. I like this one. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore

2. clear the dialer storage app to delete all the message (Settings > applications > manage applications > all tab > scroll down to "Dialer Storage" > select it then press the "clear data" button. This also deletes your call log. There is at least one app in the Play Store that will backup and restore that info. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.CallLogBackupRestore

3. Restore the text messages with the sms backup app.

See if that lets you load the message threads after the restore.

I have a Droid Incredible 2.

The Dialer Storage app wouldn't allow me to clear my data (the button was grayed in so I couldn't press it). BUT I deleted and restored all my messages using the app you suggested and that did the trick! Thank you very much for your help. It is much appreciated.

The Incredible 2 is one of my favorite smartphones! It's the perfect all touch screen global Android device! Not to mention it takes some of the BEST pictures on a wireless device. Oftentimes, text messages are unreadable when the device memory is low. May I ask how much device memory do you have available? Also, do you use any 3rd party messaging apps on the device? Below are a few troubleshooting steps that you can perform on the device to get this issue resolved for you. They are as follows:

Erase any old threaded text message conversation.
Adjust the text message limit. (100 - 150 per message conversation)
Check for software update on the device. (See next bullet point)
- From the main screen go to Settings > About Phone > Software Update
Remove any 3rd party messaging software.
Uninstall any unused 3rd party task killers or battery saver apps.
Move pictures, videos, and media to memory card to free up device space.
Clear data and clear cache in the Messaging app in Settings. (See steps below)
- From the main screen go to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > All > Messaging > Clear cache/data.
Perform a factory reset on the device. (Please see link below)

Prior to completing a factory reset, it is recommended to back up all personal information on the device. Backup Assistant is an app that can be used to save your contacts on line at My Verizon. Your Gmail account can save your calendar entries. Also, as stated above, music, videos, and pictures can be saved to the memory card. Once the factory reset has been completed then there is a brief tutorial that will walk you through the device setup. Once the tutorial has been completed, please test all voice, text, and data functionality. If you continue to have the text concern then please reply to this message for additional assistance.
