Why doing away with the unlimited plan doesn't bother me

First, I have yet to reach even 2GB. Second, I use my cell phone mainly as a cell phone. I do not text. Email is probably my "big" data user, but even that is small. Therefore, I can easily switch to a basic phone. Wouldn't like to, but will if I have to. However, what really has me unhappy is the fact that if and when I do want to update my phone, it will cost me an additional $30. Why? Is Verizon becoming another "greed" organization? It seems to be leaning in that direction.

B33, I will be treating my ol Thunderbolt with kid gloves now. Gotta make it last until I can afford to pay full price for one. That is if I have to switch. They still have not stated what happens to those already on a 4G plan. But I have a good idea.

My family have been with Verizon since the beginning. I have had it with the cell phones and the prices. I am paying almost 300.00 a month for my family of 4 to have these phones. That is insane. A house phone is looking better and better every day.

at this point without knowing what the pricing would be for the new rumored Tiered Data plan is gonna be, I could care less about if they're ending it with the people that are grandfathered in (like me) because for 1) it has only said that 3G customers moving to 4G would be forced into, the report never did say anything bout the people that already on 4G and 2) I have 3 phones that are on data plans so I'm paying an extra $90 a month just to have the 3 phones with data & if they're new "Family Shared" plan allows u to have 5GB of usage for $50 then I would be cutting my phone bill by $40 a month & with gas now-a-days $40 almost gets u a full tank of gas for an economy car or maybe even a half a tank for a truck or SUV.....I say let's not just to any conclusions until Verizon announces a Tiered Data Plan package (which they have yet to announce), only thing being said is that customers that have been "grandfathered" into the Unlimited Plan will be losing that package & as i have stated that they only said 3G customers that were moving into 4G service, nothing about existing 4G serviced customers.

It is anyone on any level of service that does an upgrade. If you go out and buy a phone and activate it, you will not have to change. It is only when you sign a new contract where you will be in their new Family Share Data plan. I also agree with you, until we hear pricing, I can't understand why everyone is saying they are going to leave.. I bet most of the people that say that, do not ever go close to using 2GB of data a month.

Bottom line, if it helps save me $$$ over what I am paying now, then I am fine with it. If it doesn't, then I too will be looking at all my options.

As I stated, and nobody seems to mind it, the one thing that really bugs me is the fact that to upgrade, I have to pay an additional $30. True, it's only a one time payment, but still, that's a new $30 added to a bill. And, as far as I can see, as it stands today, the only one going to profit from Verizon doing away with the unlimited data plan is Sprint. As for me, I'll wait and see what happens.

I think it's more the fact that Verizon keeps tightening the leash. NE2-gone, 30 day WFG reduced to 14, annual upgrades-gone, one year contracts-gone, BS $30 upgrade fee and now plans to force tiered contracts unless you buy out of contract. All that in the period of about a year and a half. Everyone wanted that iPhone and now Verizon is screwing the pooch.

Bottom line is Verizon is trying to extract more money from its customers when their profits are already enormous. CEO can use whatever clever terminology he wants, but he wants yet more of our money. Corporate greed at its finest. Wonder what his bonus for this customer relations fiasco will be? I am guessing in the 20 million range. Nice, eh?

Mortb, I totally agree with you on being able to live with a basic phone if needed. And nothing -- NOTHING -- would make me happier than if all my friends went back to them and they were actually present when we're out socializing, instead of staring at their phones.

you've probably seen it by now, but they did release a statement that said you will keep unlimited until you sign a new contract. it even specifically stated that if you pay retail for a new phone, without a new contract, you'll keep it. ebay here i come!!!!!!!!

i came home from work last night. my inlaws and their kids were over. my wife was cooking dinner. AS i walked in the door, i was checking a notification that i had just got. i looked up and my brother in law was emailing work on his blackberry and my sister in law was reading her kindle app on her iphone. my wife came out to greet me and saw the 3 of us and just shook her head in disgust as she looked at the 4 kids playing right in front of us that none of us could be bothered to notice. i may need to consider what you're thinking sidney....lol.

I was a Sprint customer for three years before switching to Verizon. In all honesty, the only reason I switched to Verizon in the first place was because all three of my children had Verizon. I was very happy with my Sprint wireless and IF Verizon goes back on their word and eliminates the unlimited data plan for those of us who were grandfathered in, I will be returning to Sprint. I am tired of being jerked around by Verizon. They say one thing and as soon as they think no one is looking, they completely change their position. I currently pay over $330 / month for my wireless plan with 4 lines. I can certainly return to Sprint and get the same service much cheaper with better customer service and with a company that isn't constantly trying to nickel and dime me to death! SHAME ON YOU VERIZON!

I am totally in agreement with you. We are thinking along the same lines...take good care of what we got for now. After that, find one on EBay or somewhere to keep from signing a new contract.

$330/month for 4 smart phones?

we've got 2 smart phones/unlim & one older tech & pay $175. to add the last, as a smart phone would only add $30/data for $205.

all have unlimited text, pic messaging & long distance on a 700 min share plan & we barely use 400 because everyone in the family/extended family on verizon/in-calling.

so why are you paying so much?

having been with sprint, how's the coverage/usability with sprint compared to verizon?

Sprint''s coverage is just as good and in some cases BETTER than Verizon's. Currently, we are on a Family Share Plan with 1400 minutes and Friends and Family with Verizon. All four lines are smart phones, two on unlimited that were grandfathered in, and two that are on a 2GB/mo. plan. It breaks down like this:

1400 Anytime minutes with unlimited Text = $119/mo.

3 additional lines X $10/mon = $30/mo.

4 Data plans X $30/mo. = $120/mo.

4 Insurance coverage, including 2 iPhones = $34/mo.

Various taxes

For a grand total of $333.64/month.

I was with Sprint for 3 years and NEVER had the issues that I've heard some complain about. Never had a dropped call, never had a poor service connection, etc. In fact, in my area, there is no Sprint tower, so I was roaming at NO CHARGE off a VERIZON tower! (Go figure...) Unlike Verizon, when Sprint says "unlimited" that is exactly what you get.

If Verizon goes forward with this plan to eliminate the unlimited data plan for those of us who were grandfathered in, I'm leaving.

Only thing I worry about sprint is that they're going to use the unlimited to pull customers from other carriers that aren't offereing unlimited, then turn around and put caps on their plans. Idk, just a bad feeling about that.

Verizon said that they would let customers keep their unlimited data, and sprint said that unlimited data is here to stay as long as the customers want it, but you know how that goes with corporate superpowers. Bottom line is all that matters.

I have to agree with you on this. But I have heard that Verizon is planning going to strictly 4g handsets, so it is moot point. I am currently eligible for an upgrade now and am trying to consider my options. It may also become a moot point as my wife becomes eligible after the change over which will take away my grandfather'ed "unlimited" plan (though not sure how this will work as the new plan is supposed to work on the account and not the individual lines).
