Should I worry about my phone's security when using a laptop through Mobile Hotspot?

I haven't found a cookie-cutter answer for this question.

All information I've found about malware (or viruses) is centered around downloading faulty Apps to the device directly (in my case, a Droid BIONIC).

Is there a security issue when the phone is used solely as a conduit for navigational purposes through another device? That is, if I'm using Internet Explorer on my laptop via 'internet' provided by my phone through the Mobile Hotspot, is there a risk of 'infection' on my phone?

Any information or articles will be greatly appreciated.

I have used my phone as a modem for my laptop for nearly 3 years now and I have never had any issues with malware or viruses corrupting my computer and/or device. If you are using mobile hotspot it is my understanding that this in encrypted and should protect you for the most part. I am careful about where i use mobile hotspot. Make sure if you are in a public area (coffee shop, airport etc etc) try to avoid accessing personal files online via your laptop (bank accounts, epay accounts, email etc) there are always those low lifes who can easily hack your information via mobile hotspots. So just be aware.

I've been tethering my laptop to my phone for 2 years and as far as I know, the hotspot gives me the strongest security available at the moment (WPA2 (AES)), coupled with a strong password that I change regularly. This is much better than the lousy security on the WiFi connection where I work. I do however, feel that as the user, you have to accept the responsibility for the apps and software you download and the web sites you visit. If you download apps with good reviews from the major markets, you shouldn't have any problems, or have to worry about faulty apps. If you download, or side load apps that have anything in the description having to do with nude women, or anything having to do with porn, or visit those sites, you're asking to be infected and no phone, or computer security program can guard against a lack of common sense by the user.

An antivirus app for your phone can't hurt, but I wouldn't count on it protecting you against poor judgement, any more than your computer antivirus. Common sense is the best security there is.

I am in no way accusing you of bad judgement, or a lack of common sense, just commenting on the average person in general who frequently falls into that category, myself included.
