having a tablet and a phone?

Currently my wife and I have an android smartphone with a data plan and a regular phone. Is there a way to have an android tablet and have that use the data plan we already have (which is unlimited) and then just have a second regular phone which would use the number the smartphone currently has - or do we have to get a third LINE for the tablet. Since the tablet really doesn't make phone calls it's confusing. Actually I find most things on the website confusing when trying to figure out options. What I am saying is, is there a way to use the tablet with the data plan so that all we buy is the tablet and a second regular phone (not a smartphone) for phone calls but don't add anything to our monthly bill.

You can buy a WIFI tablet that connects to your smartphone, but you will need to pay for the hotspot feature for your smartphone. I am paying $30 for unlimited data plus $30 for the unlimited hotspot feature on my Razr Maxx. As far as a second phone, it will require a voice plan at around $14 per month including taxes and fees. Why would you need a third phone? The smartphone will still work as a phone while providing data to a WIFI tablet.

Another option is to get a 4G tablet that connects directly to the Verizon data network. The problem there is the data plan is $30 for only 2GB or $50 for 5GB. For that same $30 you can have unlimited data by using WIFI to tether your tablet to your smartphone.

I plan to do exactly that when the new Asus 700t tablet comes out in the next month or two. I am getting a WIFI tablet to use with my Droid Razr Maxx unlimited data plan.

OK - right now we are paying for two phone lines on a family plan (one is the smartphone which also has unlimited data). If I got rid of the smartphone and got a REGULAR phone and also got a tablet - since the tablet wouldn't make or receive calls, only data and the new regular phone wouldn't use data - only make calls it wouldn't seem logical to have to pay for a hotspot feature but then a lot on the website doesn't make sense. Definitely not willing or able to add another $30 to the monthly bill let alone another line charge. We have 700 shared minutes with our phone and rarely even use 200 a month as is.

OK, that makes sense if you don't need a lot of data. You can replace your smartphone with a feature phone and cancel your unlimited data plan for the smartphone. You would then have 2 feature phones and no data plans. You could then purchase a 4G tablet with a 2GB data plan for $30 per month. That would be the same $30 you are currently spending for your smartphone data. The problem is you are giving up an unlimited data plan for a 2GB data plan at the same cost of $30 per month. However, that is a good idea if you don't need much data and you don't want to increase your monthly expense.

But, to answer your original question, you cannot transfer your smartphone unlimited data plan to a tablet.

If you decide to do this, don't cancel your smartphone line or contract. You simply purchase a feature phone and have it activated on the line in place of the smartphone. You can then sell the smartphone on Ebay to offset part of the purchase price of the feature phone and/or tablet.

OK. If I go and click on "upgrade my device" for the droid I have one of the options it gives are the tablets. One is a refurbished Samsung Galaxy Tab for $100. If I were to say OK upgrade to that I would be getting a tablet that coudn't make calls. This would leave my other phone line without a phone. So if I upgraded the phone to the tab and that let me keep my unlimited data then I would only have one phone number covered and would need a PHONE for my number. It's just quite confusing.
