I've got a Samsung Stratosphere with Android Gingerbread. I don't do much e-mailing on it (fortunately), but I do some, using the stock e-mail app that came with the phone. A week or so ago this app just suddenly quit working right. Specifically, any time I try to use it to send an e-mail (either directly or from within another app, such as e-mailing a link from the browser), after a few seconds the screen goes black, then a typical "Sorry!" message appears: "The application Email (process com.android.email) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again", with a Force close button. It is possible to receive e-mail with this app, but it crashes every time I try to send. Moreover, at random intervals when I am doing something else the above "Sorry!" message appears, and I have to force close the Email app even though I wasn't using it.
I had not downloaded any new apps when this started. I have 3 e-mail accounts set up in this app (two Comcast and Gmail). All of these are set to manual e-mail check/sync (as I said, I don't do much e-mailing from the phone). There aren't any messages sitting in their inboxes or any other folders. I do most of my e-mailing on my desktop computer, and the Comcast account servers are not overloaded with messages, since I check them frequently (and I just about never use the Gmail account).
I tried powering down the phone, removing the battery, and restarting. I tried clearing the Email app's cache and restarting again (without removing the battery). One of the Comcast accounts had a large number of messages in the trash. I deleted all of these, powered down, and restarted. None of this did any good. In fact,a couple of times when I did this the very first thing that happened when the phone restarted was that the Email "Sorry!" message popped up!
In Manage applications, the app version is reported as 2.0.1.eh16. Earlier it reported 724KB of data; now it reports 112KB (after I deleted some things). The cache is 0 (since I cleared it). Since this is a stock app, I can't uninstall and reinstall it. I've been a little reluctant to clear the data, since that, I think, would mean setting up the e-mail accounts again, but maybe that's the next step. I also find that, in Manage applications, when I try to Force stop Email from there nothing happens: the Force stop button is still active, indicating the app must still be running.
And now I've just discovered something else. In both of the Comcast accounts, when I go to the drafts and outbox folders the little indicator button at the top says there are a few messages there. But no messages are displayed! There seems to be no way to clear this indicator. Surely this is a sign of something messed up internally in the app, but there seems to be no way to fix it.
Obviously, another idea is to download a better e-mail app, which I may do. But this seems like kind of a waste of time, since I won't use it much; and I don't think it would prevent the problem of the stock app randomly popping up a message saying that it needs to be force closed, since this happens when I'm not using it anyway.
Has anyone else experienced this annoying goofiness? Any suggestions? Is clearing the data and setting up the accounts again the only possibility (other forums and threads do seem to report that this succeeds)?
