Why is it, every time i take a picture and send it to someone's email, they tell me they get it sideways? Am i sending it the wrong way?

My iPhone is upright when I take picture, & it rotates ok, I didn't know there was a feature to lock or unlock rotation.

I took a picture holding my iphone sideways, and sent it to email, and the picture comes out the right way, and is not sideways, so is that the way i have to position my phone when i take pictures to send to email?
