I just got back from a wonderful vacation and discovered my iPhone 4S racked up international roaming charges. I was unaware that would happen. What do I need to do in the future to avoid the charges?
Before getting on the boat, turn on the airplane mode for the phone. Then you can either turn off the phone and not use it or keep the phone in airplane mode for the entire trip. You can turn on wifi while keeping the phone in airplane mode to access the Internet through wifi hot spots.
