Can't delete texts

I was told today at the local Verizon Wireless business that I must have a "glitch" in ANOTHER one of my Motorola phones. This time, out of the blue, when I went to delete approx 10 text messages all at once it appeared they were deleted. But all of the contact names were still there with the date of Dec 31, 1969!!!!!!!! I've tried numerous times and they will not delete. When I get a new text and delete it, it goes to the bottom with the message gone but the contact is there with the same date. I was told that I need to do a factory reset. Well I'm just a little upset over that d/t paying so much for this phone! Already the battery sucks because of the ICS update back in July that we have never got a fix for. Now this. Anyone having this problem?

Try a Clearing of the System Cache and see if that Helps...

Follow these Instructions Harry and it Will Clear the System Cache When it's Done let your Phone Set a Bit and then Do a Soft Reset)

These are the Instructions on Clearing the Cache Partition: For Razr & Razr Maxx

Top Alternate method

Power the device off.
Press the Power button then select Power off.
If the device doesn't respond to input, press and hold the Volume Up / Down then press and holdPower button. When the device screen goes blank release the Power button while continuing to holdVolume Up / Down, proceed with step 3.
Press and hold the Volume Up / Down then press the Power button.
When presented with the Boot Mode Selection Menu release all buttons.
Press Volume Down to select Recovery then press Volume Up.
From the Droid triage screen, simultaneously press Volume Up / Down.
Select Clear the Cache Partition then press the Power button.
Select reboot system now then press the Power button.

i am having the same problem. All my texts say Dec. 31 1969 7:00pm and i cant forward any pics from a text. Verizon sent me a new phone after doing several unsuccessful frs. I also got a new sim card installed. again nothing. That is were I still stand. No answers. Said they never heard of the problem.They even went to the forum to get an answer, but couldn't find anything. I went on for the first time and found this thread.

Has anyone tried to clear the messaging application cache and data? Settings > Manage Applications > All then "find the text messaging app" and do a cache and data clear. I would think that a Factory Reset or System Cache clear would have cleared the messaging cache and data, but weirder things have happened.

Wow! This is an interesting issue! I see we have done a lot of great troubleshooting here and I appreciate everyone in the community for helping out! I would say that a Factory Data Reset may be the next step, however, let's see if there's anything else we can do.

Did you have any third party messaging application loaded onto the phone? These may be affecting the messages stored on your stock appplication, so I would recommend completely uninstalling them.

Also, have you tried what breezex suggested? Please clear the data and cache on Messaging. That is located under Settings > Manage Applications > All and the Messaging. Please try this and report back.

I have the same problem. I have tried everything suggested. When I delete a text the content of the text delete but the text block with the contact name goes to the bottom of the list and is assigned a date of Dec 31, 1969.

Anymore suggestions. Thanks.

I had a third party app for text messaging (Handcent) and I removed it. After I removed the app I cleared data and cache for messaging.

Do a factory reset and try another app. I had gosms and it didn't work for me so now I have handcent. Maybe try the Gosms. Its a really nice program

I purchased my Droid 4 on Dec 13th 2012 and it is doing the same thing. It ssems maybe the build date might be part of the problem?? my build date shows as Thu July 26 22:03:56 CDR 2012, build number 6.7.2-180_DR4-16_M2-37 Kernel Version 3.0.8-gdde05fe

I did the update to 4.0.4

It hard to believe Motorola has not found a fix for this system error. With so many of these phones doing the same thing, when a message is deleted the contents appear to be gone, but the date on every one changes back to Dec 31,1969. Not sure what significance of that day could be, but I bet a nickle Motorola does.

ATTENTION MOTOROLA AND VERIZON, PLEASE SEND OUT THE FILE WE NEED TO FIX THIS PROBLEM.

This happened to me after the latest system update 4.1.2.

I could not delete message individually or as a group.

Solution:

Go to Manage Apps. Find the Text Messaging app, then select "Clear data."

Go back to your Text Messaging app. The messages I had previously tried to delete were gone.
