I am visiting from the UK for 7 weeks and thinking of getting a prepaid Verizon sim for use in my iPhone 5 (UK data rates abroad are very expensive). Any advice on what plan to use, activation issues, data add-ons, and does my iPhone model matter (I believe there are different iPhone models for USA carriers)?

Your phone from the UK is a GSM only based phone. Verizon Wireless uses CDMA technology for their voice and 3G data network. Your phone is incompatible with the CDMA network. I would suggest that you look at the other GSM carriers in the area you are traveling within the USA.
