Droid Razr Jelly bean update issue

yesterday evening my Droid razr got JB update.

After update, the phone won't show up home screen, instead it is continuously loading the boot screen.

i had a VERY LONG CONVERSATION(almost 2hours) to VZW cust supp guy & these are the options he gave.

1) i need to buy (with my MONEY) new/recertified device to continue in the service

2) i need to do an early upgrade & buy new phone.

UNTIL YESTERDAY MY IS WORKING PERFECTLY FINE (with ICS) & VZW OTA update bricked my phone &

THEY WANT ME TO PAY /EXTEND MY CONTRACT BECAUSE OF THEIR MISTAKE.

& THE customer support guy blames Motorola & google for bad software update.

which is not true BECAUSE THE UPDATE IS A CUSTOMISED ANDROID OF VZW not motorola or Google.

BUT STILL HE SAID HE CAN'T DO ANY THING.

I NEVER EXPECTED THIS FROM VZW & TOTALLY PISSED OFF.

Did they walk you through the factory reset using the recovery menu? Could you even boot the phone into the recovery menu?

yes, i can boot into recovery menu & can select recovery option.

but after i select recovery option, it will just show some dead green

android picture(whose stomach is open with stop/error symbol)

I Wondering this as Well) My Maxx is not doing to bad but there has been a Time or Two that the Chrome Browser wants to hang a Bit, And when using Zedge when scrolling the Wallpapers they drag a bit but it seemed to do this in ICS as well JIm hows your Maxx doing so far see any issues as of Today..

My Motorola Droid Razr Maxx is working perfectly normal after the update to JB yesterday. I have been pleasantly surprised. I think the OP needs to realize there is nothing wrong with the update. It has been thoroughly soak tested. If you are having problems, either your phone is defective, your software is corrupted, or your apps are causing a problem. It has to be one or the other. Most people who have problems have modified their phones and did not get them back totally stock before doing the update. I would clear the cache, do a factory reset, and try again. If that doesn't work, I would do an early upgrade.

MY PHONE WAS WORKING PERFECTLY FINE TILL YESTERDAY EVENING/BEFORE SOFTWARE UPDATE.

WHY SHOULD I PAY FROM MY POCKET WHEN MY PHONE IS NOT USABLE BECAUSE OF THEIR SOFTWARE UPDATE/GLITCH.

THIS DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE.....

Did the update yesterday and now my phone is DEAD! Nothing NADA! Won't even take a charge. To pissed right now to call anyone. We should not have to extend any contract or upgarde to another phone.

It might be worth trying to manually install the update, but you will have to find the instructions on a different website. It can't be discussed here because of the Terms of Service.

I think I would have to agree with those saying it most likely has to do with your phone, not the update, since not everyone is having the problem. Verizon may be right, it might be a problem with the phone, so if you still have a manufacturer warranty I would try calling Motorola... Maybe even try finding a 3rd party tech person to help with your phone, since they have more extensive knowledge of how to get around these problems.

I really think that a correct clearing of the cache and factory reset will solve the problem. If the phone was working on ICS, there is no reason it shouldn't work on JB.

I got the Jelly Bean update too and it broke my phone. Went through all the steps with the tech support rep and they shipped me a replacement phone overnight. Before you go and say I need to redo the steps it didn't work. It still wouldn't boot after clearing the cache and everything. My old phone won't take a charge now either. There was a similar problem with updates on 27 Dec 2012.

There were no updates on 27 Dec 2012. That is your problem. That was a bad file that was not supposed to be released.

Yup As Jim said there were No Updates that went over OTA on Dec. 27 there was and update Christmas Eve But it was pulled shortly after re-lease very few got some of the ones that did had No issues but the some of the ones that got had some issues but this update that Just Came out is the Official J-Bean OS for the Razr and Maxx...

Did you happen to load another phones home launcher that can cause a problem with your home screen not showing up.

You are not alone, regarding this JB upgrade. My issues are not as severe, however I also had conversations with both Verizon Tech Support and Motorola yesterday. After 40 minutes on the phone, the final determination was the good old Hardware Reset, which induces agony each and every time I'm forced to do it. My issues are all centered around the internal and SDcard Storage Directories. After the upgrade I had duplicate SdCard Directories. My original ICS formatted the SDCard as SDcard-Ext. After backing up the entire 32GB SDcard to my computer, and reformatting it with the new upgrade installed, it created a new directory at the root level call Storage and within that directory is a duplicate SDcard called SDcard/0 and Sdcard/1. What really bizzare is that I can't delete the original SDcard-ext, so all my media files are duplicated but the Razr storage manager only sees the new SDcard/1. Mind you, I have hard resetted twice with the same issue resulting. The other bothersome issue is they dumped Crome Browser on the JB upgrade but the old Browser still thinks it's the default. Why would Motorola not simply upgrade the ICS Browser to Crome? Finally, I can't use ADW Launcher anymore as there is some compatibility issue that keeps closing programs or won't launch some programs I use. I have poured over 14 hours and still counting trying to get this Razr stabilized and forced to use that inferior Motorola Launcher.

Using Root Explorer I see the following:

I don't see anything that looks like a duplication

Myself along with my wife and 3 coworkers all have the droid razr and all got the jellybean update, and how we are all having issues with not being able to load webpages in the browser. 3 of us have spoken to verizon reps and have cleared the App's cache and I even cleared all data just to be safe. I've done this multiple times and the problem persists. Since web browsing is about half the reason I use my phone it is a major problem. I was told to do a hard reset but I don't want to go through all that hassle, and frankly shouldn't have to. An OTA update should not make people have to do hard resets. And no, none of us are rooted and none of us were experiencing issues before either. Another verizon rep told my coworker they were aware and it was a "nationwide issue with jellybean and the droid phones" and said a hard reset wouldn't work. There are lots of people experiencing issues and it's not automatically our fault!

This is not true. There was an OTA update that was promptly pulled by Verizon a short time later. But I had a friend that got the notification and if you google it you can see many screenshots of where the actual phone said there was an update available. It was a short period, but it was there.

You must have miss read my Post some were as i posted it.. I said there was ( "NO OTA" update for the 27th of Dec).

I did however say there was one that came out on 24th Dec. That would mean Christmas Eve! The same night that Motorola pushed it out they Pulled it in a short few Hours so Only a few handful of customers got it).

So for some of the ones that got the update had Good results with it but for some they Did not why i don't know but for about 2-1/2 months the one's that had issues had to put up with those issues till this Latest re-lease) Any way that is what i read from some of the reports that was out in the Media..

As Jim stated in his Post before His update went smoothly as i stated my went smoothly the Reason i use my Wi-Fi to download my Updates anymore and i don't Touch the Phone till it's completely done. Jim said he done a Factory Reset before going through the Update i didn't as i done one after Updating Jelly Bean but i have enough Experience doing updates as i have done them since Eclair back in early 2010 meaning i have been around the Barn a time or Two so i know what to expect..

I guess my only suggestion for the ones that are having issues after doing The J.Bean update is Factory Reset and if you haven't done the the update yet Factory Reset before doing the update. And don't worry about loosing your Apps because once you Log back into Google with your account you'll be able to retrieve them from your apps Section in the PlayStore..

Has anyone figured anything out. I have a Motorola Droid 4. It will not start (gets stuck on red "eye" thing). I've tried powering it off. I'm unclear how to do a hard reset or whatever because it does nothing if I hold the up and down and power or just the up or just the down or just the up and down. Only thing it will do is reboot after holding power button down for a few seconds. This is our only phone....come on Verizon what's up with this crap?

I'm having the following issues with the latest Droid Razr software update.

1. The audio volume is lower. The person that I’m talking to have are constantly saying that they can barely hear me

2. I no longer has speed dial

3. Phone and Apps freezes up. I can open an app and it immediately closes. Example, open dialer to make a call, it immediately closes.

I am definitely not pleased!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Speed dial was removed in Jelly Bean; alternatives are Direct Dial and Favorite Contacts widgets.

You might try a system cache clear (instructions have been posted in several threads on this forum); if that doesn't help, try a factory reset (instructions also have been posted in several threads on this forum).

Here are my problems with this new software update:

First and least important, I like just pushing the "Answer" or "Ignore" button when someone called. Dragging it or clicking on it twice to do it just annoyed me after getting used to the button (which also reacted faster honestly). Second, the alarm clock used to be it's own app, now you have to go this screensaver-like clock screen, and then click on the alarm section to change anything. Again, just a small annoying feature. Third, the phone overall seems to just react slower to everything. When I'm typing a word it's like it's freezing up thinking about what I've just done. I can type out an entire sentence before it realized the second letter I typed and actually displays it. And when that happens with Google, Google has already decided on its own that it knows what I was really trying to type and changed it accordingly. Fourth, the phone used to have a sleep mode, where it would charge faster but not be completely powered off. That option is gone for no apparent reason.

Lastly, and most importantly, I downloaded this software update when my phone was having very obvious hardware issues. The tech was trying to convince me that my "hardware" issues were more than likely being caused by a software issue and that a master reset and software update would cure it right up. They didn't, obviously, but they did cause a new problem. Whenever I plugged the phone into my computer as a mass storage device to add a song or download a picture from the phone to my computer, the media player acted as if I had removed all media and re-added it. Doing this caused it to forget what was recently added and when and remove all of the songs from the playlists they had been saved in. I use this phone as an mp3 player more than I use it for anything else, so this is particularly annoying. The hardware issue remained and I received a replacement device, which was faulty within the first 3 days, but it had the same software update already done, and had the same issue prior to its replacement. I'm on the third one, which works in every other way, except this one. I plug it in, it forgets what used to be on the SD card, and adds all those songs back into the library like they're brand new. Playlists still exist, but no songs are in them. This issue also causes my ringtones, notification tones, and alarm tones to be reset back to the default. I just got off the phone with Verizon, who said it was Motorolla that would have to fix it and connected me to them so I could file a complaint. They told me that it would be filed and when they got more complaints, their engineers would start working on a patch to fix it. So maybe by October when I'm due for an upgrade, they will have fixed this issue, and I'm just screwed until then.

I cannot believe there are people on here trying to pretend this is one persons "device issue" and that VZW is somehow not responsible for this. I have had my Droid RAZR since November 2011, treated it well, and have had nothing but great things to say about the phone. At one point I had a data connection issue to the 4G (right after the ICS update) but VZW replaced the 4G card and all was well.

I had the update forced to my Droid RAZR phone the end of March; a device that was working perfectly fine with ICS 4.0.4. Now that it is running 4.1.2:

1. I have battery life that cannot last more than 20-30 minutes on a phone call

2. Severe lag on my software such as browser, home screen scrolling, opening any apps, etc.

3. Phone randomly makes phones calls (screen off, phone sitting on a table charging for hours then suddenly a muffled "Hello? Hello? Can you hear me?").

4. Random text problems: Phone says cannot send texts but does anyways, phone sends text to wrong person, group texting is all kinds of wrong).

5. Same WiFi issues as reported by other users above.

6. Speaker Phone starts out fine but then suddenly becomes low volume. Only ending the call and redialing fixes this; until it does it again on the new call.

7. The keyboard does the spacing issues, the auto-correct is so bad that a word like "problems" comes out as "price blems". Do not tell me to use SWYPE either. If I wanted to use SWYPE I would have been. I want to use the normal keyboard. That is not unreasonable.

To resolve the issue I have:

1. Flushed the Cache. Three times.

2. Done a Factory reset and wiped all data on the device. Again, three times.

I did call Verizon and have whatever the super duper insurance plan is for $6.99 a month.

My options?

1. Receive a replacement Droid Razr (coming tomorrow). If that does not work I can go to "other options" whatever that means.

2. Buy a new Phone at full cost.

3. Buy a discounted phone such as the Pantech Marauder (Gee...I can pay for a downgraded phone? Awesome.)

Really, I am just at the point that I am going to lose business trying to deal with this. I cannot do conference calls on my cell phone without being right next to an outlet (since the battery drains so quickly), I cannot have my phone randomly calling clients or sending texts messages meant for one client to another, I cannot have my phone on speaker phone and have it randomly drop the volume (even when on the MAX setting it is not loud enough to hear).

If the replacement phone does not fix the problems, I am dropping out of the contract. I signed up with VZW for 24 months to use the phone I purchased. That means that VZW should expect that I chose a phone I would be happy with for the length of the contract and that it would meet my needs. I expect VZW to not do anything to said device that drastically changes the way it works during that time period. That sounds like a win-win and a normal standard contract.

I have been happy with my device and VZW coverage for 17 of those 24 months. Then VZW forces a software change to my device that drastically alters the way it performs, could cost me business, and essentially expects me to stay in the contract with an unusable device. That is not going to happen. I will gladly drop the contract, not pay the ETF (Yes, I will hire an attorney...a real one not some forum guy, and fight those charges in court if needed and charge his fees and the cost to switch to a new carrier plus any lost business back to VZW.

I need a reliable, working phone. Not one that starts out that way, has a forced change that makes it unusable, and then have me expected to just accept it. I live in a metropolitan area and do a lot of travel to other large cities. So switching from VZW to AT&T is not an issue for me coverage wise. Would I like to stay with VZW? Yes. Will I if they expect me to sit in a contract for 7 more months praying they fix the issue? No.

My Motorola Droid Razr Maxx worked perfectly before and after the JB update. There is nothing wrong with the phone or the update.

Oh yes. That makes PERFECT sense. It "worked perfectly fine" for you, so all the forums of people listings the same issues must be filled with liars. Or how about my friends who have the same phone or the MAXX version who now have the same issues? Or the fact that both VZW and Motorola Customer Care reps acknowledge that there are "issues" with the update and a "fix is being worked on"?

So let me see here, based on your comment I can:

1. Believe a stranger on an internet forum (who is strangely defensive over a phone and it's software and who can only expect us to believe they even possess this device and theirs "works perfectly").

Or option 2:

2. Believe there is a problem with the update based on:

a. My firsthand experience.

b. Reports of the same issue and witnessing their devices experience the same issues by people I know and trust.

c. Acknowledgments there is an issue by the carrier who pushed the update; VZW.

d. Acknowledgements there is an issue with the software by the Motorola (the maker of the device).

e. Multiple reports of the issue on forums that are dedicated to this device model as well as on the forums my carrier for customers to express these types of problems.

Let me think....which will I choose....

I don't care what you believe. I think the issue is people should have been instructed to do a factory reset and data cache clear before they did the JB update. That's what I did and my phone works perfectly. It also worked perfectly before the update. Part of the problems people are having could be related to some of the apps they have installed, but I have no evidence to prove that.

Also, I have no idea what percentage of Motorola Droid Razr Maxx owners experienced problems, but I suspect it's rather low. You never hear from those who don't have problems.

lets see I also had no issues with the update to the Razr. I side loaded it from another site. install went perfect. No cache clears, resets no wifi issues no nothing.

I believe as Jim said the issues can be traced to an app or even a phone setting. The complaints you see on line is so small in comparison to actual phone users and sales of a certain model that if this update was the culprit than everyone who received the update would have those issues. let me tell you everyone is not having the update issue.

Sorry to burst your bubble. Your assumptions are totally wrong.

In another venue the update to Jelly Bean which everyone was crying for and had to have was not what the person expected. Now other phone models are having the same issues. Not just Motorola Razrs, but LGs and Samsungs etc. But again a very small percentage versus customer ownership or sales.

So Jim makes perfect sense. You cannot change the truth. Just how you perceive the truth to be. Think....
