Hotspot App that works with Jelly Bean

Just wanted to add that going to the Share Everything plan is not appealing to me because I'd be paying more!

The problem is that FoxFi has not (or can not) update their app to make it work with the Jelly Bean OS. I suggest sending the app developers an email requesting they update the app so that it works with your new OS.

Sorry, I do not know of any other apps to give you the same capabilities while using Jelly Bean. I personally have not upgraded my RMHD to JB as I did not want to lose the advantage FoxFi provides to my smartphone experience.

Yeah if I had known beforehand this would happen, I probably wouldn't have updated either lol. Oh well, things are always 'interesting' after a system update

Maybe they are "blocking" it because you aren't paying for it correctly?

I pay for the mobile hotspot feature on my account and the stock hotspot settings work for me on my Nexus and Thunderbolt.

If you look at the compatibility list from the FoxFi web site you see that devices using Jelly Bean are not supported (NOT A CARRIER ISSUE). The application needs to be updated to work with the new OS.

Thanks for the link :smileyhappy: Hmmmm the message in the App said 'your carrier might have blocked this feature on Jelly Bean'. They might be playing the blame game, or maybe that's a generic message not applicable to everyone. I'm hoping it's on Fox Fi's side cause an update would hopefully fix it! I guess I'll just have to be a bit patient.

I get where you're coming from but Verizon allowed the App to work on ICS. And they included hotspot in the new Share Everything plans at no cost. I don't think they'll be able to stop it for much longer anyway because I hear they'll probably be legally forced to allow hotspot apps. From what I've read, the government is calling it double-charging data and they won't be allowed to stop other options from being available; I can't post a link right now, but a quick google search will bring up information for anyone interested in reading more.

Verizon has not blocked foxfi/pdanet. They can't because they got sued last summer and must allow all third party wifi hotspot apps to be used.

The problem is that pdanet needs to update the app to be compatible with jelly bean. It'll come soon-ish.

The above steps does work with PDANet and Jelly Bean on cell phone. I have a Droid 4, Verizon basic data plan, and a Galaxy 2 Tablet. Click later when tablet insists a WiFi connection is necessary and prompt goes away from then on. - Thanks.

Missed your point you didn't need Bluetooth. But it works if pdanet tablet (free) is installed on tablet, too. I guess you have a different situation. I'll try with my son's laptop maybe to see if that's your limitation.

If you have a Verizon unlimited data plan, tethering/hotspot is not free. There is a charge of $30 per month for unlimited hotspot or $20 per month for 2GB. If you have Verizon Share Everything, tethering/hotspot is included at no additional charge. If you are on a Verizon tiered data plan, tethering/hotspot is not included. You can pay for the Verizon hotspot feature at $20 for 2GB or you can use a 3rd party app if you can find one that works. This is in accordance with the FCC ruling.

PDANet and PDAnet Tablet, in bluetooth mode, while great for general web surfing, doesn't work well with most apps. I can't use most of the apps that require internet, such as Dish, HBOGO, Netflix, Candy Crush, Ruzzle and Dice with Buddies, just to name a few.
I hope that Foxfi does an update soon for Jellybean. My kids are driving me nuts not being able to use their tablets with internet connection when we are on the go.

Before the update however, people on the unlimited data plan were able to use the foxfi app without any issues. But since the new update we receive a message from foxfi stating that "Your carrier has blocked WiFi mode in Jelly Bean (android 4.1 or above). Please use USB mode or Bluetooth mode instead."

I see that no one from VZW has even touched this issue. I'm pretty sure they don't want to own up to disabling the hotspot feature with this new update...

I had the exact same experience. I have a Motorola Droid 4. FoxFi worked until I did the update this morning. My tethering feature under system settings now no longer works either. I have a limited data plan and am always way under my usage. So perhaps FoxFi needs to update its App, but why do the built in functions for my phone tethering no longer work? Went to a Verizon store and they played with lots of phone features and worked with tech support to try to get the features to work again. No luck. Verizon Wireless tells me I have to change to the unlimited data plan now to use this feature or pay the $20 tethering fee. Both of which will cost me more money. It appears the FCC fined Verizon Wireless $1.25 million last year for blocking access to tethering apps for consumers on limited data plans. I'll give it a few days to see if this magically gets resolved. If not, I'll be filing a complaint with the FCC.

We understand how it's SUPPOSED to work but that's not what's actually happening. After upgrading to Jelly Bean, 3rd party hotspot/tethering apps no longer work. Not just foxfi. After i started this thread, I downloaded a dozen apps trying to find one that works with no luck. The point is, something is wrong with hotspot/tethering and Jelly Bean that needs to be fixed. I think it's on Verizon's side because of how many apps are affected. So at this point, I guess we're waiting for an update/patch/fix. I just hope Verizon is aware and working on it.

That's exactly what it means. If you are on a Verizon unlimited data plan and were tethering without paying for the tethering plan, you were stealing from Verizon. They have now plugged that unlawful use of their network. Pay for it like the rest of us.

Sure it does. if you think paying $30 for unlimited data is fair that's crazy. Even my cable internet isn't unlimited and it's $50 a month. If everyone had unlimited data and could tether for free the network would grind to a halt. Everyone would be using their phones for normal internet instead of, you know, normal internet. Mobile networks are not designed for that.

The OLD PDAnet with FoxFi works via BT as well...Slower, but it works...And yes...The updated PDAnet+ has been finally updated and works....WPA-2 authentication.

The new JB compliant FoxFi doesn't seem to work with my Motorola Razr M. It asked me to put in a lockscreen PIN to allow a credential installation and then it tried to contact a VPN for whatever purposes and it wouldn't let me affirm the connection so I threw the app away and now I got a PIN on my lockscreen I can't revert to the slide because it's now "disabled". So I'll have to do a factory reset to restore it.

This whole 3-rd party tethering "industry" is ridiculous and shouldn't exist, ingenious hacks as those apps are.

Carriers. Should. STOP. Charging. For. Tethering. It is an unethical form of double-dipping that the "market" shouldn't have to "bear".

What I would like to see is a pricing plan for data so that nobody cares where or how you use your data. $10 per GB seems reasonable to me, and use as much as you want. If you use 2GB, it's $20. If you use 10GB, it's $100. Pay for actual usage at the end of the month.

Same thing happened to me. I was able to set up the VPN and get the app working. Anyway, I forgot my Pattern to unlock the screen. on your phone, do you see a message that says 'forgot pattern or pin?'. I clicked on that and had to sign in to my Gmail account to unlock the screen. After that, the lock was back to Slide.

Yes unlimited data with free tethering so the whole network can crash and we can complain about that. Sounds like a plan!

No, I should be able to stream HD Netflix movies to my Asus TF700 tablet 24/7, 30 days a month for $30. Geez, some people actually think that way. And Verizon sucks for charging me $30 to upgrade to a new $650 phone for $200 with a $450 discount.

Yes they do and they don't realize that just 3 dozen people doing that in their area would use up 100% of the bandwidth. Considering a tower sector could have in excess of 1000 connections....... hmmmmmmm.

I'll say this. There are those of us who have truly unlimited accounts such as mine which was an Alltel account bought up by Verizon. Verizon will just have to live with that because that's what I joined Alltel for. It's not a free ride, I do have to purchase my own phone without discount if my phone breaks.

Who gives a crap if we have wifi hotspot? For anyone not on an true unlimited plan, once they burn up their data allotment, just cut the data or they pay out the nose for more data. I don't see the problem. Let us get what we entered contract for.

Far as FoxFi working, that's just an update away and the developers responsibility. BT works for me. USB tether works. Wifi would be less complicated but I'll find my way around till then.

Verizon doesn't have to live with anything. You're with Verizon now not Altel. Altel doesn't exist anymore. YOU have to live with that.

Who cares if you use it as a hotspot? Um.... because tethering it to your PC you can use HUNDREDS of GB per month if your on unlimited data. The network can't handle millions of customers doing that. Why should the vast majority suffer because you want to be greedy and use up all the bandwidth?

Unless you're on a Share Everything plan tethering is extra so either pay it or get on Share Everything or just don't tether. Those are your choices. No uses griping about other choices not available to you.

Obviously you have no idea how contracts work when they are bought out. When a bank picks up your loan contract they can not change the terms, nor can a cell phone company. A contract is a contract and as long as I pay that bill they can't do anything to change that simply because they accepted the terms of that contract when they bought it.

As I said before once you used up your ALLOTTED data you should be cut off. Very few people have my type contract anymore as Verizon does not allow me to get new phones at the discounted price. If I want to keep my contract I have to pay $700 for a new phone. You don't know my data usage so keep those comments to yourself and any verizon rep with access to my account can verify I don't abuse my unlimited data plan.

Contracts last only 2 years. After that, there is no contract. You can leave anytime you want and Verizon can change anything they want. Also, Verizon was sued and the result is this regarding tethering:

If you are on an unlimited data plan, you have to pay $30 for the tethering plan.

If you are on the Share Everything plan, tethering is included for no additional fee.

If you are on a metered plan (tiered data plan), Verizon cannot block 3rd party apps.

Well Verizon doesn't do that and you know that BEFORE signing the contract. Or you should. So knowing that info if you are not comfortable with that then you shouldn't get the service. Listen common sense tells you that if I can get unlimited data for $30 a month and have free tethering why would I continue to pay Charter( my ISP ) $50 a month? I would just tether my phone to my PC. I easily use 100-250 GB a month. Now imagine hundreds of people in my neighborhood doing that? Guess what, eventually the network would be slower than molasses in January if it worked at all. A few peole shouldn't be allowed to ruin it for everyone else.

You are interpreting that wrong but whatever. Verizon offers free tethering via Share Everything and the FCC signed off on that. Verizon had to stop taking down tethering apps from Google Play store. That's it. The FCC allows Verizon to still charge for tethering for those on older plans.
