Not receiving phone calls

Ihave Iphone4 and the software is currently up to date. I am not receiving phone calls when people call. I called a friend who told me she had called several times this week and I hadn't received a single call. I have a daughter with health issues and I have been waiting since Tuesday for the doctor's office to call. Now I am wondering if they have called and I didn't get it. Any thoughts?
