IPhone 5 Randomly changes date and time

I just got 2 iPhone 5's and it appears to have a problem with randomly changing the the date and time. I have experienced this on both handsets and it is bit frustrating. This appears to be a Verizon iPhone 5 issue only as describe by other Verizon clients on the apple discussion boards. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4347494?tstart=0

this afternoon I had just received a SMS message and then noticed the time and date hat reverted back to sometime on september 2. to fix it I turn on airplane mode and wait about 30 seconds turn it back on it thn fixes the time once it gets a read from the tower.

If others are having this problem please chime in or if you have discovered a solution that works please let us know.

I've also got two iPhone 5's, both 64G with Verizon and both are randomely changing the time. I called Verizon but they were no help.

I'm also having the same issue. Upgraded from iPhone 4's -> iPhone 5's. Never had date/time trouble with the old phone but the new ones started having trouble almost immediately after I was able to get them activated. Stopped by the VZW store and they said they'd never heard of the issue and that they would recommend just performing a General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings. When the phone came back to life, of course it had the right time but ended up being 4 hours off later that day. Your airplane mode solution is the only thing that quickly-but temporarily-resolves this issue.

All we can do is hope Apple & Verizon quit passing the buck back and forth and actually work together to get this issue resolved.

My Oregon Iphone5 started doing this after the carrier version updated to Verizon 13.1. There are dozens of complaints on the Apple discussion pages, including mine. My phone jumps backwards to yesterday, and often six hours earlier than is correct. I get error codes saying a message is prevented because my date and hour settings are wrong. I have lost messages, sent and received, because of this. My calendar is frequently useless. I cannot rely on reminders or alarms. This has been under discussion for more than a week. Where are Apple and Verizon? OF course, I have the phone set to automatically set the time and date. Often, I can get back to the right time and date by switching to airplane, shutting down all signals, waiting a bit, and then turning my signals back on. But, the correction lasts only for a random period.

I'm in the same boat. I've been dealing with the random time/date shift since launch day. I preordered 3 iPhone 5s with Apple. The iPhone I received arrived with a scratch on the back, so I had that replaced with a new phone. However, before I had that phone replaced, it presented the problem with the time shift. It was off by 12 hours into the past. Sometimes this would throw the date off; it depends on if the time shift went back past midnight. At that point, all 3 new iPhones were exhibiting this problem. All would change times at least once throughout the day, but not at the same time. For instance, if my phone switched to the wrong time, my son's might still be displaying the correct time. However, all time shifts were the same - 12 hrs. plus about 14 minutes into the past.

The new iPhone I received from Apple also exhibited this problem before I'd finished syncing it with my iMac. I've tried every possible permutation of toggling off and on location settings, auto time zone settings, wifi, cellular, time zone settings, etc. Nothing has prevented this time shift from happening. I've restored the phone, restored from a back up and set it up as a new device, but to no avail.

All 3 iPhones have been doing this before the 13.1 carrier settings update. They've continued to do it after the update, too.

I'm in western North Carolina and nowhere near a time zone border.

I called Verizon and the expression about being useless as mammary glands on a bull comes to mind. They're clueless.

There's a bigger forum going on at Apple's Support Community right now. This is definitely a VZW problem. Time to get it fixed, Verizon. Can you hear me now?

Hey guys, i dont have an iPhone 5, but i have had every iPhone so hopefully i can help.

Put your iPhone into DFU, basically forcing it to shutdown and start all over again, it overrides the Restore As New

to do this.

Step One

Open iTunes and connect the iPhone to your Mac.

Step Two

Press and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time.

Step Three

After exactly 10 seconds release the Sleep/Wake button. Continue holding the home button until you iTunes pops up a message telling you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.

The iPhone will display a black screen, this means you successfully entered DFU Mode

This doesn't work. I did that on launch day and while that is a good idea, it is completely ineffective at solving the problem.

I too have been experiencing this problem as well. Dropped by the Verizon store yesterday, they did the samethings mentioned above. I still have not seen it go haywire. Hopefully a software update is available in the near future.

After being told by a "next level" support tech to expect a phone call about this issue today and not getting one, I called again (maybe the 4th call about this issue). This time, the "next tier" person actually opened a trouble ticket to make sure it is escalated. She told me that there is already an "alert" in their system about the problem so perhaps the word has finally reached someone who can seriously address the cause. By the way, the technician told me that it is affecting more than just the iPhone 5 but no all 5's, implying that it may be IOS related. I don't buy that. IOS 6 works great on my iPad and my wife's iPhone 4 did not do this after the 6 upgrade, but her new iPhone 5 has done it repeatedly since activation.

I still haven't got my iphone 5 to show accurate time and date yet. It keeps going back to Oct. 5.

This type of problem happened to me back in 2008 with my blackberry.

Yes this has been occurring for my iPhone 5 as well, however, only in a certain geographic region (my residential area). I discovered this just 2 days after receiving my phone on 9/21 and thinking that it was a one time occurrence. The issue does not occur when I am at work (15 miles away) or traveling out of state, but only while at home; in the evening, over night, or in the morning. The issue occurs approximately 3x in the evening and at night. Verizon has replaced my iPhone 5, so I am running my replacement iPhone 5 and the issue is still occurring. It occurs when the time is set to "automatic" (automatically sync with network) and also occurs when the time is set to "manual". The temporary work-around is to switch the phone to Airplane Mode for a few seconds and then switch back.

Issue impacts alarm clock, ability to send/receive iMessages, ability to send/receive FaceTime sessions, etc. and there is no way of knowing unless you constantly look at your phone. For me, I get screwed with the alarm clock does not go off (or when it does go off at a random time because the time goes out of whack) and when I have not received messages for several hours which draws my attention.

Verizon support is completely useless. They have claimed it is not their issue, however working with Apple tech support and Apple Engineering on many days for countless hours, it points back to Verizon. I finally got Verizon to open a "network ticket" on this on Monday 10/2 and flagged at the highest priority possible. I call in daily (I really do) and continuously get informed that there is no update because the Verizon network team is a different department and does not interface with the call center or customers. So I am in a black hole. I've spoken with countless supervisors and am informed the same. Needless to say there will be discounts on my bill.

On Saturday, Verizon informed me that my ticket is the first listed under the "parent ticket" and that is now a known issue. That is the latest update I have, other than the "Verizon will call or text you when the issue is resolved" and "there is no ETA for an update or resolution".

I URGE EVERYBODY TO CONTACT VERIZON AND REQUEST THAT A NETWORK TICKET BE OPENED REGARDING THIS. IT NEEDS TO BE HIGH ON VERIZON'S RADAR!!!!!!!!!!

I'm also having this problem with two new iPhones on Verizon. Turning on/off airplane mode helps temporarily but this issue is annoying and prevents the use of the phone as an alarm clock.

UPDATE: I called Verizon a week ago and they reinstalled the patch they installed after iPhone5's began to be sold. The tech said that sometimes a break in the download or install can cause odd problems. He did the re-install and had me check all kinds of date related stuff. Then, he said he would check back in a day to see how things were going. He never checked back. HOWEVER, I have had no problem with date or time even though I set it to "set automatically". That is more than 7 days now with no more random date/time problems.

Spent the last 8 days in Alaska in an "extended" area (non-Verizon) and had no trouble with either phone. So... despite what they say, it appears to be a Verizon problem.

Been dealing with this issue since day one Sept. 21st. I'm on my 3rd iPhone 5. I've found that the time change only happens at home. I've also found that I can prevent my time from changing when I'm at home if I turn off LTE. I use wifi at home and I'm in an area where the signal fluctuates between LTE and 3G, so turning LTE off will be a workaround until Verizon fixes this. This issue is definitely an LTE issue.

This is a VZW network issue.... I have a HTC Thunderbolt and have the exact same problem.. called into XYZ Tech Support.. notta they deny eveything.. I was sitting here browsing away when my 6:30p WED alarm for taking out the trash went off.. umm that would be great for I often forget.. BUT IT WAS 10A on MONDAY!!!the after staring at the screen for like 4-5secs absorbing what I just witnessed POOF right before my eyes it was back to the correct time... So don't feel like its the iPhone 5... for its definately a VZW network issue...

I agree this is totally a verizon issue. When you travel abroad the time and date changes right away even if you have it at manual. I have tried that before. It basically connects to the tower and gets the timezone setting.

I believe there is a bug some how in some of the towers that syncs the wrong timezone all together. How can we push that issue to the top for Verizon management? any ideas? Does someone know someone in the media?

My phone just started doing this 2 days ago. While at work with LTE, nothing happens, all settings stay. When I get home and my wifi automatically kicks on, I will get it. A reboot will fix it temporarily, but it will continue to happen unless I set it manually.

This has to be a Verizon network issue and not an iPhone 5 issue. The wrong date and time bug is happening on my iPhone 5 and my wife's Galaxy S3 for the past 3 or 4 days. We are just on the edge of 4G LTE coverage. It always happens when we are at home and happens when I am on wireless with cellular data turned off and when I have both wireless and cellular data turned off. I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. On my iPhone 5 toggling airplane mode on and off fixes the issues. On my wife's GSIII it seems to spontaneously correct.

I tried all the above and the problem continued. About 18 hours ago I shut off "Enable LTE" under General/Cellular and so far the time/date problem isn't happening. It was happening multiple times a day before that. Before I shut off LTE I was also having problems with the signal randomly going back and forth between LTE and 3G, even while standing in the same spot. I'm thinking the random date changes are connected to the LTE instability. That might explain why everyone isn't having the problem too, since the LTE instability might be area specific, and it puts the fix in Verizon's lap. If this isn't fixed in a few days the window will close within which I can return the phone and cancel my plan without the big fees, so the clock is ticking on fixing this. I'm paying for LTE and not getting it - I'm paying for a smart phone and not getting it.

It appears these forums are moderated (see the removed trouble ticket info above), which means a Verizon rep is reading this. So why can't Verizon tell us what they're doing to address this?

agreed.... this is horrible... if not for my dog waking me up. i would have been late for work twice now... sad that my 15 yr old dog is smarter than the worlds smartest phone LOL.. this has made it to Cnet and other national pages today.. hope it helps.. i have been thru two phones and still the same problem.. the only way it works is to shut off LTE.. im so glad i ditched my 3g 4s for the 4g 5... come on Verizon... lets stop pointing fingers and get this fixed... i should have a credit on my bill until this is fixed..

All- Don't bother messing with any settings. I've gotten replacements for three iphone 5 from different Apple stores and the same issue persists. I've done all the resets, nothing works permanently. It's the LTE network and Verizon needs to fix it. Verizon is giving customers money back for their data plan so make sure you ask. iphone is not the only one having issues, my neighbor has a new Samsung Galaxy with the exact problem. I have turned off the LTE so I don't have to mess with missed appointments, no time changes for two weeks now and as soon as I turn it back on the time changes backward within 24 hours. Keep complaining to Verizon.

My iPhone 5 just started doing this yesterday. Last night while sleeping it apparently changed again and I was almost late to work today due to my alarm not going off since the time change. It is a Verizon problem and nothing else. I'm still within my time frame to cancel my plan and switch back to AT&T which is sounding better and better right about now since Verizon is ignoring this issue completely it seems. As much as I would love to have LTE coverage since AT&T doesn't currently have it where I am it is seriously more worthwhile to have a phone where the date and time settings aren't constantly changing themselves and possibly causing me to be late to things.

J as a temporary work around you can do a few things. I have been successful turning off the automatic update feature in the date and time section of settings. I just set it to manual for now until Verizon (the leading suspect) and or Apple get the fixes in place. Others have had success turning off the LTE function for now, and a Tier 2 Verizon tech support guy had me turn off the auto function for time zones in the Location portion of settings. There's a whole bunch about this in the Apple Community Support pages, if you haven't seen it already.

Most of us feel like this is a Verizon issue and it seems to be getting resolved region by region as a number of participants in the thread above have reported that the phones are now stable.

Well I just started having this problem yesterday after about 3 weeks with my iPhone 5 now. I live in Springfield, IL and never had an issue until now. So I don't know if maybe they did maintenance on the LTE tower here or what that caused the date time settings to be off. As I said it worked perfectly fine on this tower until just recently. This leads me to believe that there is possibly an issue with people not settings things correctly for a tower during maintenance or something of that sort.

I have had the problem twice since I got my iPhone 5 on the first day it was available. Like several of you, I am in a "fringe" area where I have 3G in the house, but LTE if I go outside. Not having LTE isn't a problem because I use WiFi in the house, but the time change issue is a big problem. I am a new Verizon customer (previously AT&T) but I am beginning to regret not switching to Sprint instead, or even staying with AT&T. Hopefully Verizon is working on the problem, since it appears to be only on their network.

I continue to have this problem and while Verizon's coverage map says I should have strong LTE (as do the reps), it just is not consistent. I've gotten to where right before I egt home, where the auto wifi kicks in, I turn LTE off. Just a pain to remeber to do it and set it back also.

Still having this problem.. in fact almost seems worse. This phone has changed times three times since 10 am. I called VZ again yesterday and the first guy just laughed when i told him the problem, and proceeded to tell me that I am the only one with this problem, and then told me how much having an iphone over droid was a bad idea... finally he put me to tech support. The guy there said he has the iphone 5 and is having the same problem.. but they are waiting for Apple to fix the problem!!?

I told him that days ago VZ put out a statement that it is their LTE towers that ARE the problem.. he said that i was wrong.. its Apple.. When I asked then why is the GS3 having some of the same issues... he told me that its Apples software messing up the towers!!!??? are you kidding me?

I then asked what they can do for me.. I am paying for data, a premium phone.. it cant keep time.. this disables my alarms. reminders, schedules and email and messages when this problem occurs.. I asked if i could get some kind of credit since my phones basic features will not work correctly... I was told no.. im still can get on the internet so the data is doing its job.. and that all the features of the phone work as advertised and i should look for apps that will take the place of the basic clock!!!!??? i hung up the phone furious... he basically told me that they dont know if there will be a fix...

I just noticed this problem this morning when I received a call from my work place asking me if I was okay and why I was not at work. I told them that I overslept, and they understood. I could not understand why I did not hear my iPhone 5's alarm clock go off, so when I checked the time displayed on the phone, it read twelve to midnight. And the sun was shining. Not only was the time wrong, the date was also wrong, it was 11 October, instead of 23 October. Since I did not have time to play with the phone, I simply got dressed and went to work. On the way, I looked at the phone and it was showing the correct date and time, and was also dispalying LTE, whereas it was 3G at home. It appears that LTE and 3G are not synchronised, so when moving from upper to lower, that is, from LTE to 3G, the iPhone 5 gets confused and starts acting crazy. Verizon better get on this problem and fix it. I am not a technician, but I think Verizon networks for the iPhone 5 are in conflict. Verizon must make sure the conflict between the LTE and 3G networks is resolved by synchronizing them.

I don't want to be late to work again as a result of Verizon's network. If I lose my job, I am suing Verizon Wireless.

Agreed, this is happening on both of our Galaxy S3's. We've had the phones for a couple months, the problem started about 2 weeks ago. It also seems to happen to us mostly at home, and in other spotty coverage areas, never at work.

I'm tired of my calendar events and alarms going off randomly in the middle of the night because of this, so I've turned off 'automatic time updates from the network' until Verizon fixes the problem.

For me the problem continues. I was in my back yard, had LTE signal, but when I came into the house, where I have WiFi, the phone had changed from October 24 at 9:18 am to September 18 at 1:03 AM. I can't imagine that this problem has gone on for more than a month and all Verizon and Apple do is blame each other. I don't really care whose fault it is, they need to get it fixed.

Same problem... ithink it all has to do with going from LTE to WIFI automatically. I have never had it to change on me when strcitly on a LTE connection. But it's a PITA to remember to cut LTE off and back on when leaving. I just want a fix, don't care whether it's software related or tower related, just fix it!

I've found some settings that appear to work on my handset, but the same settings do not work on my wife's handset.

Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically -> OFF

Settings > General > Date & Time > Time Zone -> Enter your respective city

Settings > General > Set Date & Time > Enter current date and time

Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Setting Time Zone -> OFF

Like said it does not work on my wife's iphone 5.

She is in Michigan visiting her sister and has had no issue in 3g land, they went to Chicago and had LTE and she said it fine until she returned to her sisters house in 3g land, something to do with LTE with leaving LTE.

I do find it very frustrating that we pay so much for a device like this and then it does not function well.

I also have this problem and it's ridiculous how PCmag.com and cnet.com have already been commenting on it yet there is still no "official" problem as far Verizon is concerned. I first contacted Apple Support and their answer is to disable the automatic time. If you do that iMessage will complain at every message. This needs to be resolved for the sake of the business users that depend on the Calender function of the iPhone. It's pretty useless without the correct Time and Date.

the probelm is with verizon don;t let them tell you different you need to call tech support and complainto vzw. Vzw needs as many complaints as they can get and maybe they will do there job.. I put in a ticket yesterday this has been going on for about a month now

I am also having this issue in Northern Indiana (Warsaw). I purchased my iphone 5 last month and the problem started about 2 weeks ago. It is so frustrating. I can't use the alarm as I can't trust it to wake me up. Also, iMessage does not work when the time is wrong. I always have to flip the phone to airplane mode and then back on again and it fixes the time. Why am I spending so much money for something that won't even keep the freaking time. Unbelievable.

I'm in Santa Rosa, CA and my iPhone5 (delivered Oct. 4) phone suddenly showed Sept. 16 at 4:55 am on Thursday, Oct. 25 at about 3pm. I was driving to the Verizon store to ask what's up, and it changed back to the correct time as I got in the parking lot, and since I had nothing to show them I left. Then it happened again tonight, the phone jumped back to Sept. 17 (it's Oct 27) and the time shown was 8:43am and the actual time was ~ 9:30 pm. That prompted a search on the web and I found this forum - so it's a little bit reassuring that I'm not the only one and I'm not going crazy - but it is a problem that should be fixed. I'll call Verizon on Monday.

I had great hopes got IOS 6.01 and VZW 13.3 but I found that I had a random time shift this morning went back to 10/26 2:05 AM when I looked at it.

I reset everyting back to normal settings to see if the problem may have been fixed, but apparently not FIXED!!!!

So back to theses setting which for me had given me 3 weeks of no time shift, the following settings appear to work on my handset, but the same settings do not work on my wife's handset.

Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically -> OFF

Settings > General > Date & Time > Time Zone -> Enter your respective city

Settings > General > Set Date & Time > Enter current date and time

Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Setting Time Zone -> OFF

I think Vzw just does not care this time problem has been going on since sep 21 and nothing has been done.. The time problem only seems to affect me on Business days it seems to do fine over the weekend when time is switched to auto it's Weird and a little scary

I'm dealing with the same problem I Escalated my ticket yesterday I suggest you do the same and maybe Vzw will move a little faster on the time zone problem . Idk how hard it is to find out what system is Malfunctioning and fix it. It's going on a month and x days for me and all Vzw says is o we are working in it ya right fuck you Vzw

Well I have recently updated the iOS software to 6.0.1 and changed time settings to autmatically detect the Date and Time. For the past 4 days I have not encountered any sudden fluctuations with the time nor date. I will keep this thread posted of anything else I encounter.

I have updated my phone to 6.0.1 and settings are set to auto find - and I still have the problem. Last night it was only off by around 40 minutes, which is closer than the several hours it's been off in previous days.

Hickory, North Carolina. 2nd time I've noticed the problem. The 1st time it was off by more than 3 days! Today the time was off by 2 hours. I was on WiFi -- cellular data was turned OFF. One of the MOST BASIC FUNCTIONS..... Verizon should be embarrassed!

Just got my new iphone 5 last week. At least 3 times I have found the time off by 2 hours and some minutes (showing earlier time than actual time) Each time I have shut off automatic time setting and immediately turned back on. The time updates to correct in seconds. Very annoying that this has not been fixed after all this time.

I was told by Verizon corporate store that Apple would publish an update by mid-December. Well, guess what? It's coming up on mid-January and no update!

In order to keep my time, alarm and calendar accurate, I have to turn off the automatic time setting AND TURN OFF THE 4G LTE!

This *****, and after 2 months of it, I'm sick of it. When it's on 4G, this phone is smokin fast. I want my 4G Apple!

Why should we all have paid for an iPhone 5 and expected a better and faster phone, then end up with this crap? A phone with lousy reception compared to my 4S and one that can't keep time!

I Bought a iPhone 1month ago and had problems with the first one it would go black in the middle of a call and sometimes shut itself off and when on phone with other people it would call people and mute people and put them on speaker when my face touched it I sent it back they sent me a new another 1phone 5. The first day at work it jumped time from 12;10 to 3:10 so I checked in settings and it was set to auto to have the right time any way after shutting it off then back on I thought it was fine but its not it does it twice a day once around noon and again at 6 and goes up three hours and when it does that I can't text it tells me to update my correct time. ,,I'm upset. This is my second iPhone 5. My iPhone 4 never had that problem

Yes, my recently acquired iPhone 5 is plagued with the seemingly random date/time issues. Today it's 12 hours behind real time, and annoyed as heck my alarm didn't work!!! Verizon tech/customer service appears to be unconcerned about the issue, especially after they've made the sale. Don't know/don't care if this is Apple OR Verizon, but this needs to be resolved immediately, please.

I had the same problem with my iPhone 5 went to Arkansas last week had 8 hours of ride time to figure out the problem this is what I did and it worked go to settings then click on mail contacts calendar and scroll down to time zone support and turn it on and my phone has not lost time since

Thanks for the suggestions, but tried it and it didn't work. My iPhone 5 started exhibiting this behavior with the time and date only about 2 to 3 weeks ago. It seems to happen when it switches from my wireless to the LTE network. This morning it was 1 hour and 2 minutes ahead in time and one week back. My wife has a 4S, so not on the LTE network and it works fine. I live in the area between Seattle and Tacoma, and East. I called Verizon this am, and was told they would check towers, etc. and get back to me. I'll let you know what I hear. Ron
