Problem downloading contacts

I just switched from a non-smart phone to an iPhone5. I backed up my contact via BackupAssistant but did not use iCloud. When I use the BackupAssistant app to download the contacts (available at Vz under my account), it says it has downloaded the contacts but they do not appear on the phone. Do they have to be in iCloud and if so, is there a way to get them there from the Vz site?

I know how important it is to maintain those contacts grehundr! The iPhone 5 is Backup Assistant compatible. It is available via the app store and it is called VZ Contact Transfer.
