Powering up phone problem and it only shows iTunes link.

Powered off my iPhone 4S three hours ago. Went to turn it back on and when I pushed the power button the Apple icon came on the screen, and I noticed it stayed on longer than normal. I tried to swipe to unlock the phone - no luck.. Pushed circle button and I get a picture of the cable that connects to the computer for iTunes with an ^ up arrow and the iTunes logo. Can not unlock the phone. Will not do anything when the circle is pressed once or twice in close secession. Purchased phone on December 19, 2012 from Verizon store and it's brand new. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Let's see what we can do to get the power back to your device, limabeanlover. Thanks for the effort that you've already put forward. I need to ask a few questions so that I can be clear about all the steps taken. Did you connect the phone to iTunes or attempt to charge your device? If so, what were the results?
