The purpose of this post is to provide Verizon with some general feedback regarding the response by the general public to Google Wallet and ISIS. I don't expect anyone at Verizon to do anything about it, as I am certain that they won't, but I do think it is important that they understand the general state of customer satisfaction regarding their policies.
I would like to preface this by saying that if there is a Verizon rep out there who intends to reply to this with the usual canned response (such as "we don't block Google Wallet" or "we cannot allow it because of the secure element") you can save yourself the time. I am not interested in playing word games about who is actually enforcing the block; I am far more concerned with who is behind it. I think we all know who that is. I am also not interested in debating how each app uses the secure element, and whether the SIM NFC secure element is different than the hardware NFC secure element, because at the end of the day it comes down to this: Google Wallet is unavailable only on the three carriers that are behind ISIS (coincidence?). That is all that is relevant. Let us proceed.
For the sake of clarity, since this is a Verizon forum, the information below is in relation to Verizon's version of ISIS, and stats are current as of 6/10/2013.
- ISIS has a rating of 1.4 stars on Google Play. With a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 5, that would be a percentage score of 10%. The percentage score would have to be six times this much (60%) just not to receive an F letter grade based on the grading system used by schools.
- 596 out of 692 people rate it at 1 star. That means that 86% of everyone that rated it gave it the lowest possible rating.
- If we assume that 1 and 2 star ratings are customers who are not satisfied, 3 star ratings are neutral, and 4 and 5 star ratings are customers who are satisfied, we could conclude that ISIS a 9% customer satisfaction rating (or a 91% customer dissatisfaction rating).
- There are more 1 star ratings than six times the sum of all the 2, 3, 4 and 5 combined.
- Finally, read some of the reviews. Challenge yourself to try to find any page in the reviews section (of which there are 48) in which Google Wallet is not mentioned multiple times, each time expressing the customers' disappointment in the fact that it is blocked. You won’t.
Google Wallet has a rating of 3.2, and while not stellar, this is more than five times the rating of ISIS. (It is important to remember that the ratings start at 1 and not 0; when taking this into account, a 3.2 rating is more than five times as high as 1.4 because 1.4 is 0.4 over the minimum, while 3.2 is 2.2 over the minimum.) And upon reading the comments it is clear that many of the negative ratings can be attributed to the fact that Wallet is not compatible with many of the devices owned by reviewers, which ironically enough, is the same basis behind many of the negative ratings associated with ISIS.

As I said, I don't expect anyone at Verizon to do anything, or even to care, but it would be nice if this message could be passed along in the direction of the people who make these decisions so they know the impact that greed can have on the overall level of customer satisfaction. And if they don't know yet, they will soon see the impact customer satisfaction can have on their bottom line (which will incidentally be the opposite of their motivations to push ISIS).
Feel free to comment below with your thoughts on this matter.
