Why can't I upgrade before less expensive phone contract not completed?

Makes no sense to me. I wanted a smart phone from my cheap flip verizon phone (35.00/month - 75/mon) and the sales staff said the I couldn't do this without adding another line....Now I'm paying 2 phone contracts just so I could get more service/smart phone but have to pay on a cheap flip phone which is WAY paid for. If I hadn't wanted a smart phone so bad, I would have walked out the door and Verizon would just be getting $35/month from me vs $75/month or more.....THis makes no sense. You can upgrade your cable tv without all this pain..........THen I saw recent ad on TV that you can update your phone and Plan with no problem....Where can I do that because I have the problem. Confused on this. Can see it if I was down grading but reallly, that flip phone has well been paid for! Any ideas or suggestions?

You answered your own question in the thread title. You cannot start a new contract before the old one is completed on the same line, regardless of phone type.

You voluntarily entered into a contract for a specified period of time.

Until that specified period of time has expired, you are not eligible to upgrade your device at a discounted price.

You can upgrade at any time by paying full price for the new device that you want.

You can change your service plan anytime you want. This is not related to upgrading the device.

Cell phone companies used to allow "contract stacking" (which is what you are asking about), but they haven't allowed that in years.
