I tried uploading the latest ios software 6.3.1. My screen is frozen, do I have no choice but to return to factory settings?

I chose to update today and my phone has been frozen since with a message on the screen to connect via usb to itunes. When I connected, the only option is for me to return to factory settings losing all media etc? I'm so upset and stuck without a phone while I wait the 85min to update. Any suggestions or ways around this?

Were you able to power cycle ( reboot ) the device by holding down on the power button and home button simulatenously?
