Question about 4G LTE connectivity with Galaxy S4

I just signed a new two-year contract and decided to get Galaxy S4. There is a problem with 4G LTE.

It doesn't connect automatically. The only way I can make it connect to 4G LTE is when I restart phone or turn it off and turn it on again. If I have 4G LTE and I entered my apartment, it automatically switches to 3G. But when I go outside, it should switch to 4G LTE.

But it doesnt. It stays with 3G forever. I even turn off mobile data and turn on again, but it goes back to 3G and only way to fix it is to restart or turn off/turn on phone again.

Is there something wrong with the SIM card? I mean, the phone DOES work with 4G LTE, but only when turning it off/on or restarting. But no way I'm going to be doing that to switch to 4G LTE.

Should I return this phone for another new replacement? A new SIM card?

Any inputs I'd appreciate.

I tried to figure this out using the user guide I downloaded from Samsung but guess what, our menu path to get to mobile networks and the selections we can make are not even close to what is on page 176-177 of the user guide.

This phone has an auto feature where it selects the best available network speed. I would believe If you have CDMA/LTE selected in Mobile Networks then the phone should bounce between 3g/4g if available. The only other selection is GSM which I think is 2G and Global which I don't know what speed is available. My phone is set to Global and seems to function quite well network wise however most of my OTA stuff is by WiFi.

If the only way you can get 4g service after being on 3g is to reboot the phone then there is probably something wrong with the phone or sim card, unless there is a hidden setting somewhere that I'm not aware of. I would get it check out though before your 14 day return expires.

I would take the device off global. I had the issue initially where I work. It would drop to 3G and never come back to 4G, but now it does. I placed mine in LTE/CDMA mode.

One option I feel is missing on this device is the ability to choose just 3G, So when I am working the battery is not drained looking for a 4G connection

I just signed contract on Friday. So I have until 8/30 with my 14-day period. I'm thinking to go today again and just get a new SIM card.

I have no problem for phone to switch to 3G when I am home. Wi-Fi kicks in and no problem. But it shouln't. I live in a red area that 4G LTE is surrounded for miles and miles according to verizon maps coverage. But the main purpose I got this phone was to use the fastest data outside which is 4G LTE.

Like budone said, it should switch to 4G LTE when the phone recognizes the network. But it doesn't do it. Only the way I explained in my original message.

If I'm working, I just turn off mobile data completely. That would fix problem. But Galaxy S4 has a tremendous battery that only extremely heavy users should drain battery quicker than others.

I do the same now also as texting is how managers get ahold of me! I have to admit the battery is a beast next to the original Thunderbolt battery
