if i have an HTC thunderbolt do i need a data plan to use it if i currently dont have data on my plan.

I currently dont have any type of data on my plan. I have an older phone that isnt a smart phone. Ive never had a smart phone before and a friend of mine gave me their old htc thunderbolt. Do i need data in order to activate the phone and use it or will it function as a basic phone without all the bells and whistles of a smart phone? I am not up to renew my contract for another 6ish months and would rather not have to change my plan in order to use it. Any help would be appreciated guys and girls. Thanks in advance.

normally you can keep your plan and just add a data plan.
