When will the 8.1 update be released for Nokia Lumia 929?
You can run the preview right now.
Preview for Developers | Windows Phone Apps+Games Store (United States)
You need an App Studio account, but it's free to sign up and takes about a minute.
Windows App Studio - Microsoft
There is no firm release dates for the official Cyan firmware update and the official release of WP8.1.
Lots of other carriers have been releasing Windows Phone 8.1. For example, the Lumia 1020 on AT&T just got the update today. When will Verizon release 8.1 for the icon?
If I upgrade using the developer preview, will I loose any features that I am currently utilizing now? Also can I upgrade to the final cyan update from the windows developer preview.

no one knows. I bought my icon to get wp8.1 and I have been waiting for months.
brutally slow
no information at all from verizon
my friend just got his 1520 with 8.1 and he mocks me
Verizon is a joke. Time to drop these butt-clowns and go to ATT. The fact that they cannot even communicate an estimated range of dates for the 8.1 update is pathetic.
Way to go Verizon, bunch of New Jersey mafiosos.
Nearly ever other phone around the world has Windows Phone 8.1 and Cyan update. I want my Lumia Icon updated ASAP please! I am paying top dollar to a top tier carrier. I expect top tier service.
Software update for Nokia Lumia with Windows Phone 8 - Nokia
Can you hear us now? Verizon doesn't hear us, they don't care about us. Once they have you locked into a contract, you're on your own. Luckily other carriers are offering buy outs. So I would either switch carriers or try the developer preview. Luckily Microsoft gives us that option so we don't have to wait for dumb carriers who don't care about their customers.
I bought my Icon just a few days over 2 months ago expecting it to ship with 8.1. I can not communicate how disappointed I am in VZ for NOT sending the 8.1 update out. I have used Apple and Android, each have their own following but to do this to paying customers is not right. I work for a software company that relys heavily on Microsoft products and we would NEVER do this to a customer. If it was not for the fact that I had terrible coverage from AT&T I would look at switching to another carrier but VZ is about the only reliable one where I live.
But this latest trick is more than disheartening, it should approach being illegal. And I had the same experience when asking about the Icon in a VZ store before buying it. The salesperson didn't want to talk Windows Phone anything and kept pushing Galaxy and iPhone. That is why I ordered mine online, because of their sales rep.
Not a good move VZ to keep customers happy!

Maybe you should have taken that customer services rep advice and you would not be complaining now. Pont to ponder!

Sayeth Elector, the Verizon shill.
Honestly, Elector, how much do they pay you per post? All I ever see you do is post snide comments when people have any issue or gripe with Verizon. You do know that they are completely free to do so, right? And yes, you are free to be snotty to them for doing so, I just don't understand it unless you are being paid.
If Verizon isn't paying you for your work here, then I truly feel sorry for you. To spend so much time defending a corporation, I mean why?
Now that that's out of the way, honestly, Verizon, please release Cyan/8.1 soon! Thanks!
Have you read all his posts? Or just specific ones?
Often depending on the situation he is often against the big bad red company... We've had disagreements more than once about certain things in various other threads.
Well since you evidently did not read my reply to the poster it is you that has the problem.
The rep tried to steer him away from the device. If he listened he would not have the issue he has now.
So in hindsight the Verizon rep at the store was actually trying to get him to change his selection.
He/she bought it anyway via online and now because its not going to be going anywhere any longer the big bad cell company is to blame.
I note plently of you windows phone people resort to "shill" or "troll" or "I am employed by Verizon" because you have no facts to back up your cases.
Again I am my own person with my own opinions. If you don't like them just don't read them.
It really is that simple.
I got a support person on chat a couple of days ago to ask.
She said that they have no information on the update.
I said I was disappointed.
She did not respond to that statement
Thanks for sharing. That's a great example of the lack of customer service I am talking about. I called AT&T yesterday to inquire about the Denim update for the Lumia 1520, the lady did all but offer me a glass of iced tea and I'm not even an AT&T customer.
However, here is the major difference. Whereas Verizon told you they have no information on the update and left it at that, the AT&T person kindly stated, that they:
"have not received the update from Microsoft yet, but, our technicians are standing by to receive it. Once we receive the update from Microsoft, we will be working hard to provide the update as soon as possible."
She then went on to further inform me something about "sometimes errors are discovered in updates", etc., but did state "in which case we will inform our customers of any possible delays." (She even made a comment about how Verizon and T-Mobile won't do that. Wow!) I guess AT&T is learning something from Verizon's customer releations mistakes.
Think! What did you expect AT&T to say to you? Blame? Cajole?
Wake up. People lie with smiles on their faces all the time.
And I hope I did my good deed for today in Windows Phone Land.
My friend I have known for 38 years called and said he was buying an HTC (M8) windows phone. I explained he should stick to his android devices. Said he was going to read up on Windows phones and if it was going to work with his Windows 8.1 laptop?
I tried and tried to tell him that its not the phone to get. I tried and tried to have him just get the HTC One instead. I may have put a thought in his mind, I hope so.
He is reading the web posts to see what issues it has. Since he is a very smart person I hope he sees this is not the device for him.
But his son & daughter bought them and one works at Sprint and the other T-Mobile and I have no idea what the name is but they like them.
Now I may get to play around with one just for kicks.
Looks like Verizon is the slowest, worst carrier to have for Windows Phone users. T-Mobile just released 8.1 for their Lumia 925 yesterday. The icon is a much newer device and still Verizon doesn't seem to care about releasing the update.
And, just as I have been saying for the longest time, Verizon is the one holding up this update. Even Joe Belfiore, CEO of MS Mobile Division is frustrated with VZW in his latest tweet. "MS/Verizon are working on some bug fixes---VZW taking the quality seriously. We aren't sure how long it will take, but work is underway."
Verizon has had this update since July 15th when Microsoft gave it to them. They are just now getting the update information back to Microsoft to fix bug issues after 3 months!? That is PATHETIC! I could have done better with a crew of monkies!
And the worst part is this is concerning the Cyan firmware update. Not even a mention of the Denim update which this phone is supposed to be one of the FIRST phones to get it. I'm hoping the "working on some bug fixes" is related to Denim update instead of Cyan, but if not, and AT&T gets Denim first, I will DEFINITELY be going to AT&T!
Will the WP 8.1 Update be relased for the icon in 2014?
I'd be shocked if it's ever released at this point. It's obvious that Verizon is now in a pissing contest with Microsoft over Verizon's bloatware that nobody wants anyway.
Spoke to a customer service rep today -- still no date for the 8.1 update for the Lumia 929 (Icon). At this point, Verizon should refund the price of the phone and allow customers to cancel their contracts without penalty The Windows phones are marginalized without the 8.1 update, and the overall value of owning the phone will continue to decline until the update is applied. Verizon's messaging around their Windows phones is misleading and potentially deceptive. Verizon should discontinue selling Windows phones if they are not prepared to support them.
The latest OFFICIAL word from Microsoft. http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2014/12/19/verizon-announces-windows-phone-8-1-upgrades-for-lumia-822-and-lumia-928/
Worthless without a date.
Early 2015 could mean just about anything before June and even that doesn't help. While it's better than nothing, seeing the 928 and 822 get updates before the Icon, which was noticeably killed off by Verizon after only 7 months (yeah, I know there's still stock via 3rd parties and Microsoft) still leaves me feeling uneasy about the whole thing as well as any future support.
That is the best you are going to get until it is actually released.
This software update release 8.1 on Nokia 929 from VZW has been "pending" since I purchased this phone May 2014. Throughout these past 8 months I have heard various responses from Verizon and Microsoft direct on the release 8.1 (dates I connected with Verizon May 2014, Nov 2014 & December 2014).
As of today 2.2.15 I have been told directly from tier 2 of VZW technical department along with Microsoft direct-The 8.1 software update is "not currently available" on the Nokia 929. Nor is there a release date from Microsoft / Verizon.
LIARS!
Keep in mind I chose my windows device to avoid the fragmentation such as Android. Big BOO, is all I have to say, they got the best of me- and now I have a "old phone" with old software.
Yes, the whole was a joke.. A flagship phone is using the oldest system.. and none of them has told us why..
We need to band together and exert some pressure on Verizon so that they know this is unacceptable. Unfortunately, there's only 12 of us that bought the 929.
Talk to Microsoft. http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2014/12/19/verizon-announces-windows-phone-8-1-upgrades-for-lumia-822-and-lumia…
All of my hopes of a "reliable phone" with updated software my come true...te he hee
Verizon is waiting for the 2 years end of contract for the 929 Icon to expire so you get another new phone with WIN 8.1,
The have lied from the start and will probably never update our phones. Time to change carriers.
Yeah, even the Boost Mobile 635 has 8.1.
VZW always lies, they don't care
Has anyone been able to update to 8.1 today- it was "released" to the nokia icon today.

I also have the Lumia Icon. I do have 8.1 Denim on it now. You have to do this OTA. A few disappointments though. The camera isn't updated, still slow. And would like to have "hey Cortana" for lockscreen also. You will get Cortana with update. Visited Verizon store, they have no answers for this. It will only come from Verizon when and if they will do the updates.
If you actually have the "Denim" update correctly installed on your Icon, you will have Hey Cortana (working from lock screen, AND when the screen is blank) and you'll have the camera updates as well. Check to see that your firmware is: 02540.00019.15024.38022
Cortana works from the Lock Screen:
> Make sure you have her turned on. (Settings>Hey Cortana).
> Go through the training (She learns your voice).
You should have a Cortana icon on your start screen. If it works from there, it should also work from the lock screen. Don't know if this is the case, but there are many Lock Screen apps. If you used an app to intercept (and enhance) the lock screen, that MAY be part of the problem. You should probably remove Lock Screen apps. (you can re-install if you want to).
Note: some of the problem descriptions I have heard about can be eliminated by removing the app that mimicked some 8.1 enhancements. For example, in 8.1 you get a sound slider bar if you tap the volume button and then the Down Arrow in the upper right (banner appears at the top of the screen). Volume control apps installed under 8.0 will no longer work and may interfere with 8.1.
cgsheen gave the correct version number (Settings>extras+info>) look down the list for "Core Build ID"
One app to stay away from... it will definitely cause a Lock Screen issue
"Live Lock Screen BETA"... It is definitely BETA and will cause a delay in getting to the lock screen from power down... EVEN after you uninstall.
Good Luck.
