What does Verizon have to gain by precluding Motorola from allowing a user to unlock and root a device?

Many other service providers allow it.

Anyone who is attempting a bootloader unlock is already well-informed that they are voiding their warranty...

So, to any responding Verizon rep: Please offer a response more valid and definitive than "to protect consumers from voiding their warranties."

Simply because people will look for ways to use warranty exchanges. You'll find it all over XDA and such of ways to hide the fact they do.

I had no idea such a version existed; but it only exists for Moto X, I think.

I understand, but now I'm even more livid, if the answer is merely to compel the purchase of a more expensive model of the same phone, with no hardware difference. The phone is unavailable for prepaid plans as well.

Sure, that is true. But if you have to go through a Motorola portal to unlock, then it should be easy for them to work out how to tell whether you bricked your phone at your own risk? You'd just need to create a database and tell your floor reps to double check before simply issuing a new phone. I acknowledge the point here, just seems like an easy out.

Nope. One could simple state they didn't follow through with the process. See HTC devices and the current S-Off for example. You can go back to bone stock and say you didn't complete the process and hide the tampered flags to help out.
