You probably aren't doing anything wrong! Check 'Settings' > 'Messages' > 'iMessage' and ensure that iMessage is turned on (a toggle button to the right will be lit up green if on). If that's okay, then try holding the power button on top and the home button on the bottom-front of the screen down together for 10-15 seconds to reset the phone. Report back if still no fix.
