KitKat Upgrade is horrible for Droid RAZR Maxx HD - Major issues - Horrible testing

If anyone can read this before accepting the update...DONT DO IT!!!! There are a lot of issues especially with the RAZR Maxx HD.

You lose SWYPE, they get rid of it. You lose your personalized dictionary.

You lose the capability of auto Bluetooth. I used to be able to just get in my truck and it would auto connect. NOW everything is manual. It keeps dropping the connect and I have to keep connecting. This is absolutely horrible upgrade.

If I am listening to an app through Bluetooth and receive a phone call, it will switch. After about 60 seconds, the call is still connected, yet the phone starts broadcasting the app as well as the phone call, it drowns out the phone conversation. I have to close the app or stop the broadcasting of the app. It will no longer keep it in the background.

The text messaging is now all with a white background, you can't tell the difference between you and the person you're texting.

I'm trying to figure out how Motorola and Verizon could think this is a good thing!!!

I really hate to be "that guy" (the guy who responds to someone having issues with "I'm not having problems") but I was on the fence about this update and I feel I need to address this update.

Yes, you lose Swype. Download and install it.

Yes, the new Text Messaging is horrible to the point of being un-usable. Plenty of really good free ones to choose from.
Yes, Bluetooth is giving some people problems. This is a serious issue. I have a LG Tone headset that I couldn't get to connect. I just had to un-pair then re-pair it and all is well. Your experience may/will vary. You should take this issue very seriously as many people have had Bluetooth/ WiFi issues. Mine were minor and easily fixable.

You must CYA before doing any update of this magnitude. Contacts, apps, pictures, music, etc. is probably all backed up if you have a Google account, but back everything up elsewhere just in case.

Now, the one and only thing I was concerned about with my brand spanking new Droid RAZR Maxx HD was the abysmal battery life. I bought this thing thinking I was getting a long battery life and instead had a quick and steady discharge that brought me to my knees shortly after lunch. Totally unacceptable.

This update improved my battery life. Not a little bit, but hugely. I now go all day and get home with a 50% charge left. There are a few things I like about KitKat, but mostly the battery life. As I say, I have had minimal issues, not that others haven't had problems. I've been there myself and feared the worst before pulling the trigger on this update. But I'm very happy I did.

I know this doesn't help the OP and the last thing I want to do is trivialize the issues they are having. But if you can live without built-in Swype, Text Message app, those are easy fixes. The Bluetooth/WiFi issues are more of a crap-shoot. Take them serious, but I was ready to get a new phone due to the battery issue, so I took a chance and have no regrets.

+1 on un-pairing and repairing. Should help with the BT issues in the car.

You might want to backup all your personal content (photos, movies, music, downloaded files), make notes to where you've placed icons, and what your email settings are, perhaps export or copy down important calendar and contact information, and perform a Factory Data Reset on your device.

It shouldn't take that long to get your device back to a state following an FDR where you can use it again easily, but it will take a little effort.

Often an upgrade will leave some apps in a bad state because of uninitiated memory. Too much variation out there as to what people have loaded on their devices and how they use their devices. An FDR resets the device to a state more like how it would have come out of the box, but with the new OS in place.

I am having the same issues, been thru tech support with my office, Verizon and Motorola. Nothing has been done to correct it. First off I never wanted the update, why is this update forced upon the users that do not want it. Every app that I have downloaded I have the option to either update or not, but not the phone that I PAID for. I PAID for the phone in its original state mainly due to the way it performed. I would NOT have PAID for a phone with the KIT KAT software. My Son was able to shut down his update and avoid the KitKat update on the exact model phone I have, and is experiencing none of these issues.

Some of my issues are:

Swype- I purchased my phone with the Swype feature on it, KitKat stole that from me. I will not purchase the Swype from Google Play as I have already paid for it.

Text messaging- Color scheme is abysmal to say the least, lost the ability for deleting multiple messages, cannot see group messages.

Wifi/Bluetooth- Cannot be used at the same time, have to chose one or the other, so no streaming video on wifi with bluetooth headphones

Weak Wifi- Signal strength has gotten horrific- Use to be able to sit outside and connect to Wifi- now only have 15 ft range- could get almost 50ft prior to update- sons Droid Razr HD still can with JellyBean

No 4g- I have always had 4 bars of 4g in my house- now I only get 3g or the 1X- Sons JellyBean phone sitting next to mine has 4g, mine will not

Loss of Wifi and bluetooth- All of my Wifi and bluetooth saved connections are gone and on some cannot connect- Can no longer connect to the hands free in my truck.

Loss of LED scheme- Again with the white- my LED light for notifications use to be a green light, blue for bluetooth, red for low battery, now it’s all white.

Corp Sync- Email notifications are no longer being pushed thru- I now have to manually check email messages, no longer coming up on the drop down screen and no notifications.

Battery Life- Battery now is depleting at a tremendous rate- I have force stopped and deactivated all programs that I do not use but because the phone seems to always be looking for signal it is eating up battery life.

I mainly use my phone for business and not for play; This KitKat update has really hurt my ability to communicate using my phone. I understand that the update will not be rolled back but I do hope that there is a patch that is coming out soon, as when I read up on the different forums everywhere there are thousands of us with the same issues.

My son and I have the same Droid Razr HD, He was able to avoid the update his phone works better than mine, true my screen may slide over a little smoother and it may play video a little more clearly (if it’s not buffering) but there is absolutely nothing that benefits me or my family on a FORCED, UNSOLICITED, UNWANTED update. If you want to update fine, but do not change my settings, or remove any of my features in the update.

I am having most of the same issues on my Razr Maxx HD since the KitKat update, including (but probably not limited to):

Can't clear read text messages as easily
Can't delete multiple text messages
No quick select by letter in contacts list (quickly go to all the "M" names etc)
Can no longer dial by voice or look up a contact from the phone dial pad menu (microphone icon gone)
Can no longer text by voice from the text menu (microphone icon is gone)
variable color LED indicator for alerts - only white?
Corp email synch error
Sound level - not as loud for phone calls
Bluetooth device connection problems

I called customer support and was at least able to fix one of the above (Bluetooth). I had to do the following to fix the Bluetooth connections:

Soft reset (hold power button and volume down buttons at the same time for roughly 10 seconds until device appears to shut off, then release both buttons). This is basically the same as taking the battery out on phones that have a removable battery. This does not erase your settings or data etc.
Un-pair and re-pair each device.

I am now able to connect to and transmit/receive data to each of my Bluetooth devices.

The other problems I was told were due to Google's changes to Android and they couldn't do anything about them. In cases where a function has been lost a free app should be available to replace that function (ie in the case of SWYPE etc others mentioned). Not sure if a better text reader exists or other solutions to the other problems. Hopefully enough people will complain and an interim update will get released that resolves some of these other issues.

I woke up this am and had a big ass message, saying important updates, now my phone reminds me of the first flip phone I had 12 years ago, and im paying how much for this crap, refund, contract was broken, imo. totally sucks. how can I get my old version back, its this crapthat makes me want to just get a lan line and answering machine . thx verizon ,, jerks

This update is horrible. WiFi rarely works on RAZR HD and I'm burning through data. Calling to get credit.

I am getting:

* low volume...ringing, during calls, alarms, message alerts etc.

* a popup every fifteen seconds stating "Unfortunately,messaging has stopped" and another stating "Unfortunately, Google search has stopped"

* alarms fail to go off at appointed times.

* battery life has gone down drastically. I could go a day and a half without a charge and now I'm looking for a plug in by lunch.

* Also the keyboard is hypersensitive, adding in spaces I didn't type, putting periods between every word, doubling or tripling letters. It took me twenty minutes to type this because of making corrections.

The above problems with the Droid Razr Maxx I'm sure are troublesome.

However, the problem I'm having difficulties with involved Quick Office after the Kit Kat update. It will not open email attachments, which is very bothersome for me specifically since I'm the IT support at the company I work for, and all our salesmen use the Droid Razr Maxx and are now calling me asking how to open email attachments.

While, I'm aware I could turn to some other app that would probably work, it would be SO much easier to find a fix for quick office, instead of having to reload all of the salesmen's phones with an additional app after they are all familiar with using Quick Office.

Any insight?

If QuickOffice is already installed, what is the program that is attempting to open the email attachment instead? If you knew that, you could go into Settings | Application manager, scroll to All, then down till you find that other program, press on it, and select clear defaults so it is no longer the default program attempting to open that type of file. Now when you attempt to open that file type, if there is more than one program capable of doing so, you will be given a dialog when you attempt to open that file, and you can change your selection for the default, hopefully to QuickOffice.

Or - going at this differently, what is the extension on the file that is the attachment? If .PDF for example, you could download Acrobat and when you go to open the file, a dialog will appear, and you can select the application Acrobat or another you wish to use by default like QuickOffice.

Quick Office is attempting to open the applications, but does not complete the process. I have found that instead of 'View' from the email, if you Export it to a folder, Quick Office will open it. Even though, I'm getting some salesmen that say it still will not on their phone, but without having their phone I can't be sure if it will or not. Not all the salesmen are tech savvy.

I may have to switch to a different office app; since it's being a headache, and even though switching will be it's own headache it may be less of one. I have salesmen spread over the country, so they just can't stop by the office for me to look at it. New install it shall be, probably Kingsoft.

Ahhh. Interesting.

You know, it's possible, specially if they are not that savvy, the REAL issue for these Salesmen could be, they aren't downloading the complete message first. So the attached file isn't fully on their phone, and therefore, they cannot open it, regardless of application associated with that file extension.

Have them check their email settings, and if necessary, maybe they need to opt to download attachments by default.

Most troubling thing for me since the automatic update which I of course accepted, is that my battery life now is unable to get me through a workday. As mentioned by uniqd, day and a half was the norm and now cannot get through to 5 p.m. Help, help, help PLEASE!

BurlyAl We understand how important the battery issue has become for some users after the KitKat update. there has been success found with some basic troubleshooting steps. Fisrt, place the device in Safe Mode and see if that helps http://vz.to/1rgkFQy . Also, adjust screen timeout settings under settings,display, sleep and brightness.

One other issue I've found from Salesmen: The SD on one of our salesmen's phones started receiving an error after the update. I have mailed him a new one, with directions on how to install it. I went ahead and purchased several more SD cards in case this begins to be a pattern with other salesmen.

I have also found that with KK on my Razr Maxx HD that Google Play Music stutters quite often, battery life has been reduced, spotty group texts, numerous Force Closes on apps I never had problems on, and, although minor in the big scheme, I am missing my toggle switch for the ringer on the lock screen! All-in-all I despise this os upgrade and wish I could go back. For all the iPhone bashing I have done in the past....I might just have to move over to Apple.

The update caused these problems for me on my Droid Razr Maxx:

(1) It reset numerous preference settings, including calendar reminders.

(2) Battery drains fast, phone burning up (hot!), despite numerous reboots. I used to be at 70% or 80% at end of day. Now it's around 15%, with little use.

(3) Gmail syncing does not turn off even though UI says syncing is off. (What else is still syncing?)

(4) Traffic only intermittently shows on Google maps app.

(5) The "home rule" kicks in when I'm 1/2-mile from home, disabling 4G when I'm at the gas station. That never happened before.

(6) Does not switch from WiFi to 4G without rebooting.

(7) When dialing a number, the first digit bleeps for an annoyingly long time.

Sorry to hear about the trouble you have been having with your phone. Sounds like a couple of things going on with the phone. When you say the device gets hot, how hot does the device get? Are you able to hold the device? Any signs of smoking or melting?

Thanks for responding Brian. I do not think it was dangerously hot, but certainly hotter than I recall it ever being. I've been rebooting it after each use, so I'm not sure how hot it gets. Rebooting stops the run-away battery drain.

Safe mode appears to eliminate the problem, but it also seems to disable my apps. Prior to booting in safe mode, it was clear that running gmail would start the battery draining fast.

Thankfully, safe mode enabled the phone to be charged this evening when Google Now sent me a tornado warning. This was the closest I've ever been to a tornado. Unfortunately though, I was unable to go on twitter for updates and I ended up waiting out the storm in the bath tub far longer than I needed to. You guys ought to be treating phones as potentially life-saving devices and TEST your updates prior to releasing them. Sheesh.

I noticed the following additional problems prior to booting in safe mode:

(8) I get random reports of apps crashing, even if I'm not running the apps -- even after just booting. I recall Amazon Kindle being one of them.
(9) I got a notice for a text message but the text app did not show me any new text message. Everything I saw looked old. I was unable to manually clear the red indicator from the text app. This is the default text app. The number eventually cleared, though, perhaps after one of my reboots.

For the record, this phone was the best smartphone I have ever had, prior to this update. After the update, the phone is hardly usable. Safe mode seems to allow me to basic stuff, though, which is good.

Jtlapp, have you considered backing up all your personal content to a PC, like photos, music, videos, downloaded files, copying down email settings, important contacts, and sketching out where you've placed icons on your home screen, then performing a Factory Data Reset?

That is what I would do. Then after about three charge cycles, your battery runtime should be better as well as the other behaviors....

If the issues stopped while in safe mode then I suggest backing up your phone and performing a hard reset http://vz.to/1mNh8Ct. In many cases a hard reset is necessary after major software updates. Make sure your 3rd party apps do not auto restore. Test for a few days without downloading any 3rd party and see if you notice a difference. Keep us posted.

18 days, almost 3weeks, since I first posted and still no fix to the issues with KITKAT! I keep seeing the numerous issues with the KITKAT update and Motorola along with Verizon just keep closing their eyes to the issues.

I have arrived at my job location only to find out that a meeting had been moved to over 70 miles away, the email was sent the day prior, (needless to say I missed the meeting)!

I have performed: reboot- soft reboot; partition clean; remove and reinstall exchange account; and Factory Data Reset.

My I.T. guy in our corp. office says that I am not the only one- EVERY phone with the KITKAT update has similar issues, this is over 50 phones! That only the new phones that are loaded with KitKAT are working- less than 10. Now they are talking about making us switch to the I-Crap. Something needs to be done to fix the issues with KitKat.

I too am experiencing MANY issues!

WiFi signal has gone to next to nothing (then switches to data plan..)

I can no longer take good video, it skips and jumps...

I can no longer watch videos cleanly...Netflix, personal videos, youtube, all jumpy

my 4g is in and out, goes to 3g...or just stops...

my phone restarts itself 4 or 5 times a day...

it locks up often...

I get a message box that states...sorry, amazon, or whatever other app. has stopped, 20 times a day...

I cannot attach pics to text all the time...

NONE OF THESE ISSUES WERE THERE THE HOUR BEFORE THE UPGRADE!!!

I spent lots of time with Verizon troubleshooting...no dice there...one guy even said that due to a crack on my phone, that's why these issues are there...please note, I cracked the top of the screen the third day I had this phone...no issues then, or for nearly the year since...no there is!

They directed me to Motorola...Motorola said its Verizon, but had me do the same steps as Verizon...Verizon then said, oh its googles issue.

I am stuck with this phone til I either PAY outright for a new one, or I get the contract redo discount in 14 months!!!

I'm having all of these issues and then some. I've been more than patient for about a month, after the update force-downloaded on me while I was on vacation (no wifi download as it's set up to do...) After I got home and eventually installed the update, Everything seemed different. All symptoms you state, and then some.

The battery life went from great to HORRIBLE. I've never had to charge my phone at work (10 hour shifts) and I would constantly use Pandora and other online radio's while also text, making calls, and checking email and social media on my breaks. Now I have to charge it half way in to the night if I use it like that.

Now when I use Google Maps to navigate anywhere, it KILLS my battery life, has froze up on me twice, and it gets at least as hot as those dry chemical compound hand warmers. I normally can't keep it in my pocket afterwords because it is so uncomfortably hot.

If I run more than one app at once (ei: Spotify & Bodyspace), it will freeze and I eventually have to do a hard reset.

This is just my opinion, but you suggest putting it in safe mode and other say to download different apps that work. Well We shouldn't have to change the way our phone should normally function and we definitely shouldn't have to download other process-leeching apps to make it work how it used to. Either fix the issues so many people have addressed, roll back the update, or give us an early upgrade so a new phone.

Verizon are the ones who gave this update their good graces to release to us and it should be their responsibility to make sure their customers are getting what they pay for. I switch from AT&T because of all of the praising I heard from my friends. After about a year, they aren't looking so hot.

WOW, I keep getting the runaround on this issue. Called Verizon 6 times. Verizon says it's the first time they have heard of the issue..... laughable...I told them to look on this site and read about it then. They have now sent me to Motorola to talk with Motorola. SURPRISE!! They don't know anything about the issues either!. I just want to know if they are going to fix it. As I was writing this, I just was told by Motorola that it's Verizon's issue, the software has nothing to do with it. Really sad. I can see why people hack their phones to gain control of what these companies do. Both, companies are pathetic.

It shows when I unlock the phone.

When sending text or just doing normal things. I haven't seen it.

Although I am always on the watch for it and ready to shut the power off if I accidently update it.

By the way. Customer service for Motorola is not in the US.

The only thing they can do is read the screen.

They don't know how to think.

I will be leaving Verizon shortly.

Once I get a few hrs of free time to go into another providers store and look around I'll be gone.

Same problems on my Razr Maxx HD, including messages about Amazon Kindle stopping unexpectedly (not using it). Not insanely hot, but hot enough that I have frequently turned it off to be safe. Battery rarely lasts more than 8 hours now without recharge. Used to last 1-2 days. My wife is having similar issues on her Razr M

I'm having the same issues as many people here. Since the KitKat update, battery life is severely diminished, I lost a keyboard that worked fine, and my LED no longer works for anything. The only way I can tell if I have a message or missed call is by turning the screen on.

In regards to the keyboard, I shouldn't have to download a separate app for something that is integral to the phone.

I'm not a heavy user of my phone, and could often go a day and a half without charging. Now I'm lucky to get through a work day.

Is there some sort of fix for this? I went to my local Verizon store, waited over 45 minutes for someone to tell me they checked these forums to try to find an answer with no luck. I was also told once KitKat is installed, you cannot go back to a previous version. Very poor service.

As was suggested to me, I booted my phone in safe mode by holding the volume-down button while it booted. I left it in safe mode for a week. It seemed to work fine, with much reduced functionality. It wasn't eating up the battery. I then decided to reboot in normal mode. I was expecting all the problems to return, but the phone is now stable.

I'm not getting as good battery life as I had before, but that may be because my settings got obliterated. I had taken much care to figure out good battery life settings. I don't know what they were.

The functionality of the phone has changed, but I guess that's to be expected with a new release. I find the new SMS app hard to use -- can't follow conversations now, can't see more than 3 short lines of text, the notification count doesn't seem to agree with the actual SMS count.

I've also accidentally dialed a few people. I used to be able to pull up contact info by clicking on the name of the person in the call log (instead of on the handset icon). Doing so now calls the person. I seem to have to manually look them up in the contacts app to get to them.

I wish I could back out this update.

Someone suggested that I back up all the data, clear the phone with a hard reset, and reload all the data. I might do that, but I think I'll be doing that with a different phone. This used to be the best phone I ever had.

Don't touch the upgrade unless you want to destroy your phone. It's toxic

jtlapp I would recommend using the hangouts app for SMS, as they are moving to that soon anyway. I didn't like it before, but since the upgrade, it actually loads my facebook and other social media pictures for my contacts finally, and it is pretty smooth.

Gemini0526 My battery still suffers a bit more, but the phone is so much smoother and quicker. I guess it was tit for tat. I can still get a healthy 8 hours of heavy use, or 12ish of moderate use. It doesn't help that I'm constantly flipping wifi and bluetooth back and forth for my Fitbit Flex. That's been the worst pain in my side. EVERYBODY - download the Google keyboard for the best free swype function. You can thank me later. Lastly, the "soft" reboot (holding down then the power button 10 seconds) did fix the majority of my bluetooth issues.

You will not get more battery life with the upgrade, you will get less.

In my opinion the upgrade is not worth it and if I could roll it back I would without thinking twice. The minor speed that you get from the upgrade is not worth the other issues that come from the upgrade. Ever since Kit Kat was forced upon my phone I hate my phone, my frustration with it is more than I can put into words on this forum.

Issues that are not resolved:

Shortened battery life- can no longer go an entire day on a single charge.

Cannot use Wi-Fi and bluetooth at same time- Wi-Fi will stop working and go to using phone data plan with no warning.

You will lose Swype- Google keyboard is similar but it is not the same. If you want Swype back on the phone you will have to pay for it from the Play Store.

Weaker Signal- you will lose signal stregth- I have gone from a full 4G connection to low 4G or even 1X, same with Wi-Fi- I use to be able to go more than 50ft now I cannot go more than 20ft

Corp Sync- if you have Corporate Sync then you will have to delete your sync and reinstall- there is no way to avoid this.

Text Messaging- There is no longer a way to select and delete multiple messages, you have to delete messages either one at a time or delete the entire conversation. The outgoing and incoming text are all the same color so you cannot tell which messages you sent vs the incoming.

Color scheme- its white everything is all white boring white.

I am having similar problems.. In addition, My alarms may or may not trigger, but I will get a notification that I missed an alarm. That is helpful. NOT... Then my text message either never send, or are delayed. If I reboot, they seem to send for about 10 minutes ok. Then stop again. My headphone jack stopped working, so no handsfree (bluetooth works sort of) but the ear buds are done. And my swipe credit card doesn't work any more... I just filed a complaint with Better Business Bureau today regarding this. Razr HD is having issues sending and receiving texts, battery life is horrible, and the screen will glitch out and then go black. The Verizon reps I talked to said I would have to buy a new phone at full price myself or get off my current plan (I still have Unlimited data) and join the Edge program.

I feel like this may be the only way this issue will be resolved, considering it seems like Verizon Support is just turning their heads on this matter. If I file a complaint, do you mind if I link this thread in the message?

KitKat was installed without my consent
Google Voice activated input seems to have disappeared
Waze has a hard time finding the GPS
Waze is no longer able to calculate a list of nearby low priced gas stations (via Navigation Menu)
Updated applications say they can be loaded to the SD card but no way to do so seems available

Kit kat sucks.. I have to constantly charge my battery. I would roll back this update in a heartbeat. This may lead to me actually buying an iPhone

take the issue up with Moto directly. They may be more inclined to get you

a replacement phone that isnt the horrid MAXX Headache HD. Be persistient

and you may need to accept a direct swap and then have it changed out a

second time.

BY the way, on mine, i wasnt able to use the mic like many of you. God

forbid you need to dial 911, you better pray that your bluetooth is

working.

I was thinking the same thing. I don't like apple but my Maxx doesn't even last through the day with barely any use. Now this is the worst phone ever for me when before I could not live without it, the battery life was amazing.

Unfortunately it's not just your Maxx that is suffering battery longevity issues. The KK update is a huge disapointment for many because of that one issue... Pile on all the other issues... Ouch.

I had said that behavior and performance improved after leaving my phone in safe mode for a week, but I have often been calling the wrong person since then. I just figured out why. The phone app will show me a name and photo of a person, I will hit dial, nothing will happen, so I hit dial again, and I get the wrong person. I had gotten used to having to hit the dial button twice, but this time I'm noticing that the phone number changes when I hit the dial button the first time, without the photo also changing. No wonder I keep calling the wrong person. The phone app is messed up.

Contact Motorola. They will replace the phone with different model. Verizon

is useless at replacing these.

Glad I found this thread, I've been having awful battery life since the upgrade to the point that I need a charger around me constantly. I've done the factory reset before and not doing it again since there is nothing that can be done since it's not in "warranty". I'm thinking at this point maybe a BBB ticket / Motorola ticket is necessary?

Other than that has anyone been able to successfully downgrade back to jelly bean?

I am being asked to upgrade again. Has anyone installed the new upgrade? How's it working? The phone is being pretty insistent about upgrading. Upon saying "later," it forced me to set a reminder to do the upgrade.

Please help. My friend yesterday updated her phone and now her entire picture gallery was deleted. she has a Droid Razr Maxx HD. All of her other photos downloads, instagrams, photos from messaging are still intact, but the 900+ photos in my gallery are gone. she tried calling verizon help desk, but the person's only suggestion was powering off and back on, which did not work. Please help if you can - does anyone know how to recover these photos as it doesnt make sense that the update wouldve deleted them all permanently. Also she didnt manually back them up to google drive or anything like that but dont know if there is a way to get them off a sim card or something as another option? Please advise

Pictures are precious so I understand why you're concerned br1990. We're here to do everything we can to bring those pictures back to the phone. To clarify, this is on her phone correct? You mentioned her pictures are there but not in your gallery, can you please provide details on this? How did you add your gallery to her phone? Are all the albums unhidden?

I too have experienced issues with Kitkat. My Droid Maxx HD was a great phone until Kitkat. My only option appears to be spend my money and purchase a new phone or fight the endless battle with refurbs. Wish my company could break people's stuff then make them pay to fix it. Verizon-I thought your customers were "the best part of Verizon". Sorry but I don't feel like I am.

Well, I've moved on to LG. I counted The Droid RAZR Maxx my favorite phone up until the OS update. After the update, I spent a week with a phone that barely functioned and ended up keeping it in Safe mode. Another update later, and I found that the phone worked, even if draining more power, but I never figured out the new user interface. These basic functional issues persisted:

(1) I ceased to be able to simply press a phone number to dial it -- I would often press twice and end up calling the previous number I had dialed.

(2) I ceased to be able to add a phone number to contacts by pressing on the number. It would allow me to walk through the process, but it would never retain my changes.

(3) I was no longer able to switch back to a previous caller after taking a new call. I always lost the caller.

(4) I couldn't figure out how to call voice mail. There used to be a built-in function for that somewhere. I eventually realized I had a voicemail app and had remember to open this app instead of the phone app.

(5) The text notification always remained for the most recent message, with the effect that the notification light was always blinking and so the light lost all meaning for me.

I was excited about the Droid Turbo, but in the store I saw that the user interface was virtually the same thing that I found indecipherable on my Maxx. I figured that I needed an intermediate company protecting me from Google's bad UI decisions. I was also not happy that the camera increased pixel count for the same poor hardware, with the net effect of producing an even slower, less reliable camera at no better effective resolution.

I settled on an LG G3 instead and have ordered the ZeroLemon extended battery. Bye Motorola.

I have been having the same problems as everyone else since kitkat, and they are only getting worse. The funny thing is I have almost none of the same problems on my pure android phone and tablet. That tells me that the problems arise from the changes to the operating system that Motorola and or Verizon have put on top of it. Motorola has gone through ownership changes, and so disarray from them is to be expected. Verizon is too busy printing money and they obviously don't care anymore about being the top quality wireless provider in the USA. I this phone was an exclusive for Verizon and I hold them ultimately responsible. I it is tragic that they can advise people to backup data and do a hard factory reset and 'let us know how that works.' They have the Microsoft Windows mentality. Now I sit hoping for a lollipop to be issued and/or my contract to mature.
