I shattered my screen and a friend gave me her old phone to use until my upgrade. How do I switch my service to her phone without adding a new line?
Sign into your MyVerizon account online and choose the Action "Activate or Switch Device". Then follow the instructions on screen.
This does not work because it requires me to select from the existing phone numbers on my plan. The phone I want to switch to is not on my plan and therefore, the phone number once associated with it is not on the list. No option to enter different number.
When you click Activate or Change Devices, you should be presented with all the phone lines on your account, assuming you're the Account Owner and logged in as such. Use the radio button to select the current phone (the one with the shattered screen) and associated phone number that you have, then click the red Next at the bottom of the screen.
On the next screen, click Activate Device, then click I Am Activating a Device That I Have Not Used With This Account. Enter the device ID from the phone that you are switching to (the phone your friend is loaning you) and then follow the rest of the prompts. Depending on the phone you have and what you're switching to, you may need a new SIM card; if so, one can be ordered while you are in the switch device section of the web site, or you can get one free at your local Corporate Verizon store.
If, by chance, you have a 4G phone and you're switching to another 4G phone, and if you're lucky enough that the SIM card used by both phones is the same size, then the easiest thing to do is turn off your current phone, remove the SIM card (be careful not to touch the gold contacts), place it in the new phone, power the phone up, and then allow it time to connect to the network and program itself to your number/account.
