My Samsung Galaxy S4 does not give me a voicemail alert notification. I don't know if I have a voicemail unless I call in to voicemail. And there is no prompt to switch on notifications when I call.
I am having the same issue on my S5. Kind of miss my iPhone 5 where I could listen to it right from the phone menu.
