Why did Droid RAZR reset itself?

On Friday my Droid RAZR reset itself back to factory settings all by itself. It was fine, and then 10 minutes later when I looked at it my apps, contacts, photos, and everything else were gone. It was prompting me to set up the phone like it was brand new. First off, why did this happen? Second, can I get anything back?

The device should never reset itself that's horrible. How long ago did this happen? Was your info backed up using our cloud or some 3rd party app? If using the same Gmail app the paid apps should come back.

This happened on Friday, July 4. I was out of town for the weekend so when I got back I went to the Verizon store on Monday the 7th. I asked why this happened and how I could prevent it from happening again. They told me that sometimes phones do this on their own and they don't know why. There's nothing I can do to keep it from happening again, apparently. Because of my extended warranty they've ordered me a replacement phone for free which should arrive today.

I had never signed up for Verizon Cloud so nothing was backed up from that phone.
