To convert to Verizon Edge, Verizon requires that you purchase all new smartphones. This is unacceptable.
Why do you want to convert to the Verizon Edge program if you don't want a new phone?
I don't think the Edge program is limited to smartphones, you can also purchase basic phones.
I'm not sure what you mean, though, when you say Verizon requires you to purchase new phones in order to convert to the Edge program. The Edge program is nothing more than an agreement to purchase a new phone. If you don't want to purchase a new phone, then of course you would not be able to enter into an Edge agreement.
I ABSOLUTELY THINK IT IS A SCAM AND CAN NOT WAIT FOR MY CONTRACT TO END AND THEN I PLAN ON GOING ELSE WHERE. VERIZON SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES. I EVEN TRIED RETURNING MY SERVICE WITHIN THE 14 DAY TRIAL PERIOD AND WAS GIVEN THE RUNAROUND AND MORE SALES TRICK TACTICS AND WAS FURTHERMORE SCAMMED. NOW I AM STUCK WITH THIS CORRUPT COMPANY FOR 2 VERY LONG YEARS!!!! WORST DECISION EVER GOING TO VERIZON.
Kind of like saying a car dealership "requires" you to purchase a car if you want to enter into a car loan agreement?????
With the current smartphone line discounts, when you do the math edge can actually save you a few bucks. But you have to perform the math relative to your need/desire to upgrade. Do you like to upgrade yearly or do your rarely feel the need to upgrade? Also do you require less than 10GB per month or do you require 10GB+ per month? Depending on your answers to both of those questions you may find that Edge can save you quite a bit of money or just a few bucks, but in the end even a dollar saved is something to consider.
See the following thread related to the single line plans with Edge Edge Plan for Single Line - Evaluation
If you are on the More Everything Plan then the math will give you slightly different results. For Example, you want to upgrade to the Samsung Galaxy S5:
Purchase via 2 year contract w/10GB Data Package (Cannot Upgrade until 24 Months):
Up front payment = $199.99 + Tax + $30 upgrade fee = 229.99 + taxes
Monthly payments = ($40 line access + taxes + $100) x 24 months = $3360
Total Payments = (299.99 + tax) + $3360 = 3589.99 + taxes
Purchase via Edge contract w/10GB Data Package (Keep phone for 2 years):
Up front payment = $24.99 + Tax on full cost of phone (no upgrade fee) = 24.99 + taxes
Monthly payments = ($15 line access + taxes + $100) x 24 + ($24.99 phone installment) x 23 months = $3334.77
Total Payments = (24.99 + tax) + $3334.77 = 3359.76 + taxes
Total Savings with Verizon Edge 10GB+ discount pricing:
2 year payments - Edge payments = $3589.99 - $3359.76 = $230.23
Hope this helps
I do not agree I think it is good marketing for people who really do like to upgrade to a new device on a yearly or semi yearly basis. Even if you do not need to upgrade yearly your data needs may turn the math in your favor when considering the edge program see my example below. The math does not lie.
Why would you want to be on Verizon Edge if you're not wanting anew phone? The Edge program is a payment plan for new phone purchases.
The problem here is people still want a subsdized price and the $25 a month discount.

Edge is better than a subsidy on the higher priced phones even if you upgrade every year. A Galaxy S5 is $200 plus $30 upgrade fee so $230 plus taxes. On Edge it's $25 a month but you get a $25 a month discount. Basically the phone is free. Even with the $10 discount you're paying $15 a month so after 1 year you've paid $180 and you can get a newer phone. $180 < $230

Although when you upgrade after one year on Edge, you will STILL be paying that $15/month on your NEXT phone while the person under contract will be paying $0. $0 < $180 and with the 2 yr cost, $230 < $360.
EDGE is totally a scam, just upgraded 3 phones and also added 3 tablets becuase they were free. Asked what my monthly bill would be and they told me $186 that was with taxes. Ok great only 6 more dollars a month then what i was paying plus a whole lot more GB's. First bill came and was over $300 ok i understand the first bill is usually higher because i switched in the middle of the month but not $120 higher. So i called customer support and the told me my ongoing bill was going to be $235 plus tax. I told them the verizon employee told me my bill would only be $186 a month, they said sorry i cant help you with that this is what it comes to. I only agreed to do the EDGE because my bill was going to be $6 more a month. Had I known it was going to be about $70 higher i would of not done that because that is just ridiculous and i really can't afford that much more to pay for a cell phone. So i am going to raise hell at the store where i purchased the phones today and for all i care they can take the phones and tablets and put them where the sun don't shine. Left Verizon years ago over phone prices and horrible customer service and went to AT&T, but cam back because had heard great things about them from other people. BIG MISTAKE!!!!!
That was the point of my post... If you are in the market for a new phone then yes Edge can save you money over the long haul when compared to the subsidy pricing. In fact, the edge plan with the 10GB+ line discount will save you money whether you get a higher priced phone or a lower priced phone. There is still a savings if you run the numbers with a $300 dollar phone or a $600 phone and yes I agree with you people want the $25 discount with out the requirement to get a new phone.
As for the above this savings is true after twelve months of payments but after 24 months of payments the math tells a different story
Purchase via 2 year contract w/8GB Data Package (Cannot Upgrade until 24 Months):
Monthly payments = ($40 line access + taxes + $90) x 24 months = $3120
Total Payments = (299.99 + tax) + $3360 = 3349.99 + taxes
Purchase via Edge contract w/8GB Data Package (Keep phone for 2 years):
Monthly payments = ($25 line access + taxes + $90) x 24 + ($24.99 phone installment) x 23 months = $3334.77
Total difference compared to Verizon Edge 8GB+ discount pricing:
2 year payments - Edge payments = $3349.99 - $3359.76 = -$15.22
Did the salesperson indicate to you that the $186 included the monthly installments to pay for your phones? How many phones total do you have on your account? Just the 3 new phones plus the tablets? Which data package did you choose?
Verizon Wireless is basically a criminal who misleads their customers. My contract was almost up. I sign up for the Edge program, and the way it was explained to me, was "oh this way you can upgrade when you want (really once a year) and you aren't in a contract". Well that was a lie. I decide to go elsewhere so I call and ask what I need to do. They say "well, you are in a contract", (ok that wasn't told to me but fine) I ask what my termination fee is, they say "To get out of your edge program, you have to pay the $500 remaining fee for your phone ( Galaxy S5 which I was paying monthly, $25) and a termination fee for your service of $150."
HOLD up, so basically you are telling me that you guys came up with a way to charge two damn termination fees????? If I decided to take my phone with me, I could almost understand that, but If I give the phone back, why would I be paying for something that is no longer in my possession??? They say" That is how the Edge program works" WHAT COMPANY RUNS GAME LIKE THAT ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY ARE GOING TO TAKE THAT PHONE AND RESELL IT??? WHAT COMPANY LIES AT THE START OF A PROGRAM AND NEVER TELL YOU WHAT THE REAL DEAL IS???
I will be making it my business to go to every possible website to not only complain but warn potential customers to stay away from this company who will mislead you and then rob you when you decide to walk away. I worked for a telecommunication company for 10 years and never heard of anything like this in my life...WTF?!?!?!?!?!?
The person who said you had an ETF doesn't know what they are talking about. If you are under Edge, you have no ETF except to pay off the balance you owe on the phone. You are not under a service contract when on Edge. The only way you would have an ETF would be if you had another line still under contract.
