How am I able to download paid apps from google play store if they didn't ask for my credit card?

Hi I have the Samsung Galaxy S4 and have had it for just over a week now and I downloaded some apps on the phone from the google play store that cost money but not once was I asked for a credit card of any sort on file and this is my first time using google play store. Does this mean they will bill me for these apps to my next Verizon Wireless bill? Or how does that work? I just wasn't sure how that works for apps or why I was able to download apps that cost money for free.

You will be billed for the apps either on your next bill or the following one.

Do you have a Google Play Gift card balance? Did you setup your Google Play Store to bill to your Verizon Wireless account?

When I go to the play store and I select an app it gives me a pop up that asks me to enter my credit card information and right there it says that I will only be charged to my credit card for apps that cost money. Now right under there is an option that says skip. If I press skip the screen goes away without asking for my credit card information and the app automatically begins to download. I did this for the past few apps. Nowhere did it give me an option to select to have them bill my Verizon wireless account so I am unsure. At first when I started to download paid apps the credit card option never popped up. It wasn't until recently that this started to pop up.

Do you have a Google Wallet account, linked to a debit or credit card? That is also linked to your Google play store account? The charges may be applied there.
