Why does my HTC Incredible heat up and turn off?

My HTC Incredible phone is 1.5 years old. Lately it shuts off after a few minutes of use and I have to restart it for the same thing to happen. Also the phone can heat up. Any clue to what's happening? I ordered a battery replacement and am waiting on it.

The device will turn off with any of the installed apps (email, internet, etc) -- but mainly when the device is removed from the charger (but the battery is fully charged). I can restart the phone but the same thing happens w/in minutes. The battery doesn't appear swollen.

I ordered a replacement but the battery but it wasn't charging at all (so i think i was sold a bum battery). I stopped at my local Verizon store but had to leave since it was close to closing and still 5 folks ahead of me. My contract is not up until Feb 15 and if I can't get this resolved w/i the next day or two then I'll have to buy a new phone.

(On a side note the default email application no longer works with Gmail. It throws a 503 80345 which is specific to Droids. If I want to get to gmail I have to open Google first). I've tried the recommended fixes but they don't work for me.)

Was one of the "recommended fixes" a system cache clear? (Steps may vary slightly depending on your specific phone model)

Performing a wipe cache partition removes any temporary files that may be causing an issue with the device. All personal files and settings are not affected by this option.

Power the device off.
Press and hold the Volume Up and Down button then press the Power button.
When presented with the Boot Mode Selection Menu, release all buttons.
Press Volume Down button to select 'Recovery' then press the Volume Up button.
From the Droid triage screen:
1. Press and hold the Volume down button.
2. Press and release the Volume up button.
3. Release the Volume down button.
Select wipe cache partition then press the Power button.
Use Volume keys to navigate options.
Select reboot system now then press the Power button.
Use Volume keys to navigate options.
