Why is my phone using data when I'm connected to wifi?

As of today 8/25/14 at 8:56pm Indiana time I turned both of my phones cellular data off. I was being charged data during times I was connected to wifi. The only time I am not on wifi is when I am driving so I'm not using any data. I have an iphone 5. Anyone else having this same problem? We have never used close to our data max and today we have reached 75% and have 8 days left on our cycle. Something is not right.

Two of our iPhones, a 5 and 5c, have used up 8 GB of data, while the other two, a 5s and a 5c have used the normal amount, which combined is about 1.5 GB. I've tried everything to fix the problem and nothing seems to be working. We have 10 GB and we've never used more than about 4 or 5.

I know that data usage is a big concern sab1521. Are you closing apps when not being used? Are you turning notifications off until you're on wifi?
