Why is my data usage is so high? Even when phone is on my personal wireless Internet, I have gotten data charges. Times for these charges do not coincide with any known picture or video messages or Net use. Even charged when sleeping.
Hi Daedalus13
We have had the same problem with one of our phones. We have four i-phones ( 1 iphone 4, 2 iphone 5 and 1 iphone 5s) and one android on our family plan. Three months ago the iphone 5s data usage soared!!! We are still having the exact same problem. Usage at all times of day and night when the phone is in our home which is 100% wireless. No reason for ANY data charges to be incurred. It is only happening on the 5s.
I called Verizon and spent over an hour on the phone with a "senior" support person. They were unable to figure out the problem and decided it must be an Apple issue with the phone. I told them their forums were full of people with this same issue and complaint, they fluffed it off. I have seen one of the discussion threads even suggesting a class action suit! We get 8GB monthly which we have never come even close to. The overage on the most recent bill was an additional 19GB. Absolutely insane! We have everything shut off for auto updates and almost everything set to wifi only for apps. Especially the big ones like youtube of anything like that.
Verizon is still refusing to accept the fact that everyone started having this same overage issue around the same time. They have not been helpful in resolving the solution and most people are simply letting their contracts run out and not renewing. We will be doing the same.
Verizon should spend more time looking into this issue and trying to resolve what the ACTUAL problem is, it is not an Apple problem, it is a VERIZON problem, and it started about three months ago!
You are not alone. Check out the other discussions on the forums.
Thanks. The phone with this issue is iPhone 5c. No problem with the Android. Watching it very closely but wish Verizon would respond and figure out what is going on. I'm thinking about turning the phone off overnight to see if we still get data charges!
Hello Daedalus13!I can clarify this issue for you, no problem! I definitely understand your concern about the data usage on your devices. The iPhone 5c device is different, by design from Apple, the manufacturer. When using Wifi, if the device goes to standby mode (when the screen goes blank), cellular data is used by default. I recommend that when using Wifi, you turn off cellular data. This way when you're connected to Wifi and the phone goes into stand by mode, cellular data will not be used. Yep iPhones are notorious for it. If you have the iPhone on wi-fi and set it down once the screen shutoff so does the wi-fi. Also many app are defaulted to use cellular or update via cellular. If I set my Android phone down it stays on wi-fi even if I don't touch it for hours. best to completely shut off mobile data on an iPhone unless you're in a situation where you have to use it. The sad thing is people blame Verizon for this and not Apple. And people will use this as a reason why Verizon should offer unlimited data. If you have a leaky faucet the answer is not to have the water company offer you unlimited use for one price the answer is to fix the leak.
