Pictures backup but contacts do not - Help

I have a Samsung 5. Pictures backup fine. The message I get is cloud backup of contacts has failed

When I go to the cloud some of the contacts are there but the ones entered the last month or so are not

Hmm, that's strange. Let's look more closely. When you add contacts to your phone, you have the option to add as a "Google Contact" or "Device" contact. Please check the recently added contacts to see if the were added as device or Google contacts. Typically, your phone will only save to the Cloud if it is stored as a device contact. The problem is when I do a backup the message always says “cloud contacts backup failed”
