Why does data show up under promotional and plan data tracked separately?

I have a 4GB family shared and purchased 2 S5's this week. I understand the promo data plan to I get an additional 2GB now.

However, some of the data is under the "promo usage" and some of the data is under "plan usage". Why is there a distinction?

How do I know when I am using promo data or plan data?

Please advise. Thanks.

I think there is a valid reason it is being tracked separately.

The promo data has an expiration date and customers have a VERY short memory!!!!! If the data was not tracked separately but simply lumped in with the regular data there would be MANY customers who think they have a 6 GB data allowance instead of a 4 GB data allowance and 2 GB/month of promotional data. When the promotional data expires in a year and falls off, instead of those customers complaining that "Verizon cut my data allowance without my approval and did not lower my bill", they will simply see they are no longer getting any promotional data.

The combined data, though, simply acts as one pool of data. As long as you don't go over 6 GB on the 2 phones combined, you should have no problem.

Do you have more than 2 lines? Since the promo is based on the line maybe the line with the promo uses that first before using the shared data.

No, I have a total of 2 lines. Was hoping someone could clarify as I can't seem to figure out when date is going into "promo usage" or "plan usage".

I was told the promotional data is for 2 years, not 1 year. Is that correct? Where can I tell how the promotional data will last?

Current 1GB data w upgrade offer is 2 yrs. I like rcschnoor's explanation. You can check MyVerizon>MyPlans&Services> to see when your promotional data ends.

Your usage is applied to your promotional data first, then to your standard allowance. This way if you received usage alerts they are based on the actual data allowance that you are paying for. Example: You have used 75% of your 4gb allowance (at this point you would have already used up your promo data for the cycle)

We Just upgraded a phone yesterday. In My Verizon it shows the date the promo date ends. In our case it says Oct 26 2016. Which is actually 4 weeks long than 2 years. Also I can see the promo data is used first before regular data. which is fine by me.
