Why do the download and upload speeds off the tower located at 70 Herb Rd Sharon CT vary so wildly? I was getting download speeds of 10-15 mbps and upload half of that on LTE. Now I'm lucky to get 2-5 mbps download.
Because mobile data is a shared service and has limited bandwidth. Just a couple dozen people all trying to watch streaming video can slow down the network for everyone.
Also, not all of the towers have beefy backbone feeding them. Some have 100M or less. Out in the rural areas, the towers often have 100M fiber running to them which has to be shared across the LTE, 3G, and 1X data networks. Priority is given to the voice data over the fiber carrier.
Does't matter what the backbone is. The tower sectors themselves can only handle 150 Mbps MAX if its been upgraded XLTE otherwise is 75 Mbps.
