Data Plan???

My 2 year contract just ended with Verizon. I just bought a Samsung Saga not from Verizon but from a 3rd party. I did this because I didn't want to be forced into a data plan and which I heard they did. I was able to activate the phone but was forced into a data plan. I choose the $29.99 E-mail and Web for Smart Phone. Two questions:

1. Is the $29.99 the only thing extra I'll be charged or will I also get charged MB charges or additional air time when I browse?

2. Since I'm not locked into a contact and did not get the phone from them on a discount will I be able to cancel the $29.99 E-mail and Web for Smart Phone plan. Not saying I want to right now but just thinking ahead. I find it hard to believe they would let a person walk away for a $29.99 charge when I'm giving them approx $90 a month already.

Hello and welcome! Man this is really messed up because you missed the cut off date by just THREE DAYS! Let me explain . . . Verizon began a new policy regarding "Smartphones" on 11/14/08. Essentially, any cell phone released to their network on that day or after would from that point forward have to be on a data plan. Any "Smartphone" released PRIOR to that date could be grandfathered into the Verizon network and NOT have to forced into a data plan.

I hate to tell you but the Samsung Saga was released on 11/17/08 :smileysad: . This is why they are forcing you into the $29.99 data plan. You will NOT be able to drop that plan I'm afraid. You can read more about this policy from the link I provided below:

Now to answer your question about web browsing charges . . . with your plan you are covered for Internet browsing and should not be charged extra for merely browsing.

Thanks for the response. If I called and cancelled and they said no and I said well then I'm going to another carrier ... would they really give up the $90 they are getting everymonth from me!

The system will NOT allow them to process the order, so their only option is to allow you to leave. The rep you talk to won't be able to do anything about it.

I know VzW hates losing customers over that data feature, but unfortunately there's no way the systems even ALLOW the data packages to be removed. Once a rep removes the feature, it auto adds itself back on.

It is unfortunate; however, in doing so, they're saving you from accidently racking up a HUGE data bill, like so many others have. I for one will gladly pay for the data plan and use the internet instead of paying a several THOUSAND dollar bill because my kid jumped on the phone and surfed for hours on end without me knowing.
